I'm the chairman of the board of a local society of computer scientists. We have bylaws that describe a code of conduct for members governing their work. 1. Let honesty govern your work 2. Heed professional responsibility 3. D

Python is not really object oriented. To get information hiding you have to wrap your class in a closure and that closure has to track the individual instances. It's not clean code and it's horribly inefficient. Python is also

I've been fired twice. Both times it was more of a relief. Once because I engaged too much in my work, took it too seriously. Other time was due to me not liking the atmosphere but having made the decision to "make it work anyw

The US code is 22 million words. [1] is a good visualization of it. I'd wager there are tons of redundancies that could be refactored. That being said, I'd also wager that careful refactoring is not on DJT's mind. More sl

I can't imagine myself wanting to leave. We are defining the worlde for everyone else. The amount of power over the course of human affairs is staggering when you think about it. A fullstack can be toiling away on some CSS layout pr

Even if it's present in the crust there's the question of how easy or hard it is to convert into usable bars/wire/films. The first asteroid mining operations will focus on asteroids where you can get huge chunks of ore.

Functions as first class citizens in Python. I knew that you could pass function pointers as parameters in C but there was something so foreign and new about it.

If the Hammeroff-Penrose conjecture is correct then the only simulation possible is whole replication with quantum effects present. The unreasonable effectiveness of neural networks makes that unlikely thou.

We should. I was not expounding a policy. I was merely stating the results of a conference on the subject at hand. All of what was discussed in the article is weak AI. Narrow programs delivering narrow features. Social engineering does

Not what I said. I'm cautiously optimistic about life extending technologies. I'm not sure computing technology and AI will carry the day, I'm more inclined towards the physical sciences.

General AI like that is not years or decades away. The problem hasn't even been stated clearly yet. AGI is probably a century away or more. It's not a resource problem, it's a problem problem. I attended an AGI conference

Your example posits an evil developer with a BOFH mindset. S/he is trying very hard to get away with doing as little work as possible while meeting absolute minimum requirements. I know that you are parodying the Agile mindset but an

Every time this is in the news I get a feeling of awe for operations teams having confidence enough to deploy this. I've usually been in small teams with the feature mill factor turned up way too high.

Hardest thing I ever had to profile had to do with accessing Postgres from Python. I needed the cold-start time. I ended up kinda fuzzing it to find an estimate. Filled a table with proper data and accessed random keys to find an average

If a company stonewalls your apparently legal claim for remuneration of services or delivery of product then you should at the very least turn to a collection agency. This case will probably require a lawyer.
