A bit more than a year. There are some extended longeurs, especially Sodom and Gomorrah , during which I was getting a bit fed up with it so once or twice I gave myself a few weeks off. It is a magnificent novel though, worth sticking

It sounds more like you're saying that software is an art, rather than programming. The details of how the program was created have a similar status to incidental stuff about tools and how Michelangelo used them.
