Games development as a programmer. Lots of writing new code. Parents were artists and I very nearly majored in English. There's a lot of lessons I took from traditionally creative fields.

The term "attention management" might not apply to everyone, too. I'm most effective when I'm in the zone, which usually comes easiest when I'm listening to music and rapidly flicking between things. My thought proc

In games this is widely known and accepted even, but I guess that's a slightly different case since there's some history behind the why. It's AI because the actors are game characters trying to emulate a real behaviour, wheth

I know a few people who have bought condos here recently; they just want to live here. While I'm sure most of the market is investment based, there is also a decent chunk of people who just want to live here, even if a lot of them are

A somewhat popular place in Vancouver for restaurants/night life is yaletown. It's somewhat scuzzy and expensive, but it has brick buildings I guess? Plenty of fantastic places in Vancouver with character, but I don't underst

I already use noscript. So many websites work at 100% and load 2x as fast with only 1/3rd of scripts allowed.

2 biggest things for me were vimplug (or something to make plugin installation easy) and NERDtree, which lets you open a window for directory navigation, set bookmarks, and change your current directory path for other vim commands. I'm

C++ isn't object oriented, it's a hodge-podge mix of many things. It did start out as "C with objects", but that implies it's also C which largely operates without the OO notions of objects.

I think at work we use 120 char limit, with klang formatter making it so you don't have to think about it much. 80 seems excessive, but no limit means having to horizontal scroll or even resize windows in an aggravating way. Some sort

Do you think it's better than spending that same time socializing with coworkers outside of work? Because it isn't.

I'm super appreciative of my current role for this and other reasons. I'm the sole software developer on a team of 6 people in a mostly isolated corner of the code base. I'm getting a ton of experience making calls and collab

In my experience Unreal Engine 4 suffers from this. It's a fantastic game engine and in many ways its code is really great, but on many of the occasions when I've had to trace call stacks in its source, it's a mess of long fu

I'm a bit skeptical of the median income being lower than rural areas. I could see median income relative to cost of living being lower, but median income by itself being lower would be shocking. Do you have a source on that?

I wouldn't equate purchasable cosmetics where you direct purchase the item you want with no RNG to being assaulted in either of those ways.

Re: the "go easy on yourself". I think it's hugely important to set aside relaxation time and, though it may seem counterintuitive, be active during that time about being relaxed. To me, that's usually a visit to the zoo

I think the first 10%, like civ, the excitement is in exploration of the different directions you could take the project. Some people right at the start will know exactly what they want to do, but for a lot of people it isn't clear unt

I don't think C/C++ teach you how the computer works, but they do teach you how memory works, something which is almost entirely abstracted away with most other languages. You'll avoid some really bad decisions that you might

As an anecdote, a lot of programmers and heavy gamers I knew in high school lived on remote islands and took a water taxi over to ours for school. They couldn't do after school activities without sleeping over at someone's place.

Additionally, Unreal Engine 4 charges only 5% gross on revenue exceeding 3,000 USD per quarter. Epic's CEO tweeted about these markets taking 30% where other transaction facilitators only take 2-5%. https://mobile.twitter.co
