Yes, it's feeble. The article does not connect some of the trends it discusses to the problem of income inequity. For example, there's no discussion of how increased taxes will fix income inequity nor is it obvious why it will. Gates, Buf

Not only have the client to server protocols been reverse engineered, some proprietary IM services supply libraries for using their proprietary client to server protocols. When I mentioned IM, I was referring to the fact that service to ser

What if social networking is like instant messaging? After many years, the proprietary instant messaging services have not been replaced with an open alternative. Open does not always win.

Earlier in this thread you estimate that GTalk and Facebook have 10% of the instant messaging market. Does IRC have more users than 10% of the instant messaging market?

IRC is not proprietary and I did not say that it is. I think it's great that you are using IRC in your project. Overall, there are many more active users of XMPP than there are users of IRC. When I say active users, I mean users who send a

XMPP does have a lot of use (Google Talk, Facebook chat, Chrome browser sync, ...) and is the most successful non-proprietary instant messaging protocol. I wonder what the state of the world would be like today if XMPP had been more approac

After all these years, XMPP is still a PITA to implement. Starting at the lowest level, XMPP streams are framed by the 2nd level elements in an XML document. Clients and server must keep an XML parser open for the lifetime of the connectio

Facebook is aware of the rule in question. The Facebook restricted stock plan was designed so that the participants are not considered stock owners. I doubt that Facebook went ahead with this deal without carefully examining the issue.

I know that Facebook created Cassandra, but do they use it for anything substantial? I read that Cassandra was created for the Facebook inbox, but I more recently read that Facebook is now using HBase for the messaging platform.

I find that the live feed is difficult to scan because everything jumps to the right and down when a new photo is added. I recommend changing the grid location where a new photo is displayed instead of shifting the photos.

The comparison is between Facebook and Microsoft's online services, not all of Microsoft. Microsoft's online services didn't do 60B a year in revenue.

The comparison to Facebook is not fair. Facebook is now profitable and Microsoft online services are not. Facebook was never in the red to the tune of 2B a year. Microsoft online services had a multiple year head start on Facebook.
