I read an earlier edition of How Linux Works and definitely enjoyed it. Code examples were pretty sparse and it focused more on how the different concepts fit together, and I think only one or two parts were dense enough to be any trouble t

Enterprise and Pro editions don't have the same bloat as Windows Home, in my experience. Since the author is using a work computer, it's likely that they didn't encounter Candy Crush pre-installed and pinned to their start me

Some of Tolkien's other writings show that he wasn't happy with the explanation that ended up in the Silmarillion. He had multiple other explanations, and none of those is fully canon either.

There was some recent news about a vulnerability in pkexec that's been around for 12 years. Who knows what Python 2 exploits are still undiscovered in a similar manner? Since it's no longer actively supported, attackers have all t

The fancy appearance is probably due to user customizations. Simply changing the terminal font to one you like better and changing the background from pure black to another color (while keeping it dark) makes a big difference on appearance.

Historically, Thinkpads have had excellent support. My T430S is great (although definitely aging out), and apparently the new X1 Carbons still work well. Also, both Dell and Lenovo have models that come with Linux if desired, so those are

Yes, kernel.org is the archive for the Linux kernel. I didn't realize that they publish articles though, which is pretty neat.

I disagree, many people use laptops as replacement desktop these days so having expansion ports is important. My new job gave me an X1 Carbon with only two USB type A ports and this is my workstation now. If I want to use any accessories

Probably for an easier direct comparison with 16:9, which has been the de-facto standard for years. Without having to do any math, you immediately know that the screen is proportionally taller than a 16:9 screen would be, which makes for ea

My experience wearing a hat on my college campus was similar. I found a faux leather fedora (same style as Indiana Jones) and I'd wear that for sun and rain. I don't think anybody said anything negative about the hat, but I got s

Actually, shooting jackets (for high-power shooting, at least) tend to fit pretty tight. The idea is that they help hold your body more rigid, giving you better stability when shooting at longer ranges (200, 300, and 600 yards). While I a

Does knowing C require knowing Linux\Unix? While I know there's a strong relationship between the two, I don't think that it's a hard requirement. You can learn C syntax and how to compile it with pretty minimal Linux\Unix

When I went through my university's C programming course, the instructor barely knew C. For the students with limited Linux experience, the concept of man pages was unknown to them, let alone that there are man pages for C functions. S
