Hey, I know this a rando internet commenter here, but what do you think is the solution then? To me, adding more money and guns into this conflict sounds like a really bad idea. But I'm not there and I'm just a fool as a result. I

I guess I meant it as more of a longer term solution. In that, given a few years/decades of a two state solution, you'd have a partition occur, whether by force as was in India/Pakistan, or by more natural processes over time

I also think we passed the window for a two state solution. Having two ethno-nationalist states next to each other is bad. Giving them a very complicated border is worse. Having them hate each other with centuries of history and territory c

Amazing! The product recommendations at the end are gold too! A 'hacker' spirit there. In terms of signal length, can you store the images/data in a flock of birds too? I wonder what the RAID set-up of a flock of starlings is

Hot Take: Maybe this DOGE approach of sledgehammering the bureaucracies is all there is left to do? Look, I have family that works for the Feds. I have also collected money from federal programs. I know the pain that is coming and is here.

I'll issue just one counterpoint to the comments here: Biology I'm not a CS person, but much more of a 'hacker' in the old MIT sense. I work for a biotech company and with a lot of bio people. I've taken big-boy CS

Aside: The internet is terrible for cocktail recipes. Discovery is terrible, recipes are badly listed most of the time, and the blogs don't curate well. Youtube is not that bad if you can find a good channel with someone that has actua

I'm curious for an economist's take here. It seems to me that the incentives are such that now you've just guaranteed that all PIs will now submit 6 applications every year. It may be less that what you originally were seei

I can't wait to see when the narcosubs are driven via long fiberoptic cables with an occasional surfacing for GPS lock. The sea floor between caches is just going to be littered.

In some of the pro-natal online discourse there is an idea to mortgage the future earnings of children against current childless people. I think I have that right but, honestly, it's a bit confusing of an idea to me. I think these peop

Lots of hot takes here in the comments. I think that reading the paper is more informative than just reading these comments (something I am often guilty of). My thoughts on the paper: These are economists, not demographers or social workers

I mean, if anything this makes the point. Germany's fertility rate is 1.45 and the Netherlands' is 1.43. There is very little difference despite the change in education policy. So, extrapolating from this very little bit of data,

Per what little I know of population studies, birthrate and fertility are the same. Fecundity is the potential to have offspring, but is an unmeasurable quantity.

I don't know about that one. The people that it 'polls' aren't that representative, leading to heavy bias. Which is fine, you can correct for that. It's just that I don't know their biases!
