I wish I could copy and paste this on every low-effort/high-level "X tips for ML in production" article (for context, TFA's site was spamming Reddit and HN a while back). Most corporate decision makers don't know wh

This phenomenon is both depressing and heartening. If anything, I feel like the general CS community needs more "gotcha" moments (feat. Schmidhuber-like characters) that can bring previously-buried prior art to the surface again.

I have yet to see a "good" EHR. The top dollar solutions are at best usability nightmares[1] and since every major vendor is based out of the US, they all optimize for billing/CYA over reducing clinician workload or increasin

There are a few efforts working in this space. As you can imagine, all of them are experimental: - Dex: https://github.com/google-research/dex-lang/ - Hasktorch: https://github.com/hasktorch/h

I encountered this once in an internship in Switzerland (didn't have to write any, thankfully). Quite the esoteric little platform indeed!

As someone who uses TF/PyTorch/JAX and numba for their day-to-day DL work, I've been watching Julia's post-hype developments in this area intently. Julia has probably the most vibrant ML ecosystem of all the non-Python l

Of course, but the flip side is that same confluence of attributes has also exacerbated issues of reproducibility. Just as science and the methods/mediums by which we conduct/disseminate it have changed, so too should the standard

I don't think that removes the need to provide enough detail to replicate the original environment though. We write one-off scripts with no expectation that they will see outside usage, whereas research publications are meant for just

Conversely though, it is often impossible to obtain the original code to replay and identify differences once that step is reached without some sort of strong incentive or mandate for researchers to publish it. When the only copy is lost

(non-TF) Keras has notoriously bad multi-GPU support though (and was generally not well optimized. Case in point, the latest version just re-exports/forwards to tf.keras). Looking at something like https://lambdalabs.com

AMD does have ROCm/HIP, hipDNN and hipBLAS (which mirror their counterparts), but these and the rest of their modern GPGPU stack suffer from a lack of polish, ineffective evangelism and subpar documentation. It's difficult to just

There have been a few discussions on what Vulkan needs to be competitive for GPGPU programming. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22880502 comes to mind. I would also note that multi-gpu distributed synchronization (espe
