"AOL: Acquired by Time Warner for $120 billion" I'm pretty sure it was AOL doing the acquiring of Time Warner. I remember hearing this from an AOL exec, thinking it was absurd, and then looking it up online only to find out she was right.

thanks for the help. the additional markets was definitely a huge bonus, but you also need to consider that 6 million gen 1 iPhones were already saturating their potential demographics in quite a few places. interesting nonetheless...

getting your own dedicated short code is expensive and takes a while (~2-4 months). i'm not familiar with the process, but in theory you can apply for a direct connection to EACH carrier (i think you need insane volume to even attempt this

email to phonenumber@txt.att.net / messaging.sprintpcs.com / etc... once you receive the text, a reply will (should? works for most major carriers - att on my iphone tested) send the message back to the original email address.
