Incandescent light bulbs are generally very inefficient in producing light, compared to LED for example. They produce a lot of heat and not much light for which they are made. So in this context I suppose that gp implies that these threads

Thanks for the background link. I did not know about that and it's a good incentive to donate them some money for the legal battle. TL;DR of the link: No more uploads to support a court case in India which SciHub might win and thus est

I disagree. If you are willing to kill a person why would you care whether the person willingly agreed to a donation? You could also just fabricate a letter of consent. I live in a country with Opt-out and the only thing I think that should

I still remember reading all the Readers Digest books my mom gave me to read in the 90s that were from the 70s. The amount of excitement in these articles about colonies all around the solar system in the early 2000s captivated me. While re

Well a big question is also the future of their foundation. They have achieved a lot with it and helped a great deal of people around the globe. So a messy divorce would have quite a wide range of implications. So I share your sentiment.

As a European it seems funny to bash at NASA when at the same time the defense expenses in the US are several orders above the SLS cost.

I disagree. SLS has nothing to do with the Apollo program. It's built mainly from Shuttle parts, so everything they need is somewhat there already. If you compare that to SpaceX's starship which needed to develop a completely new

Not quite as capable as Falcon 9 (16.kT to LEO, 5.2m fairing diameter) but it will certainly cut into SpaceX's cake once it is online. While they are currently spending a lot of effort on recovering the 1st stage of the Electron via pa

That is most certainly correct. They also mentioned that these are images from engineering cameras, so they are normally responsible for navigation. The real HD footage will come in over the next hours as the bandwidth just is not large eno

The last point you make is only partially true. The Starship is using Methane and Oxygen and produces mostly CO2 and Water as output. Since they plan to produce propellant using the Sabatier process using renewable energy you get a nearly c

I just started building a MPCNC, so I still have time to change one thing or the other, so I'll give your post a good read. Thanks for taking the time to write everything up. In the German community Estlcam [0] seems to be used a lot.

The starship (what we saw yesterday) should have 3 sea level and 3 vacuum Raptors. The booster is currently scheduled to have 28 Raptors (some of which are fixed and some which can gimbal) although these numbers are subject to change depend

I agree. It's a huge issue for software dev companies as it is related to a non-negligible effort to keep your software working efficiently with a large array of GPUs. One potential workaround are libraries such as KOKKOS [0]. Of cours

Unfortunately writing a paper about implementing your new fancy algorithm (TM) in GIMP is hardly ever successful, so many of those die in some git repo.

I did my PhD in Civil Engineering and a 2 year postdoc in Austria (home country). I saw absolutely no future in academia, chances to get a permanent position were really slim and you could only go from one project to the other, which you ha
