The character × is not universally used for multiplication - in various places in Europe we use . for multiplication, and not the · character, literally . as in 12.34 = 408. The only time × is used is for vector cross-product. And similarly

It didn't prohibit innovation and optimisation on PC. You just have a few form factors and the motherboard has to have the appropriate dimensions. None of the connectors on a motherboard today fit any of the hardware that was current w

"Start" does not refer to starting things, it refers to the first button you need to click to make the computer do things, i.e. it's the starting point for doing anything. In a bare Windows 95 install, you have your "My

Language servers are supposed to mitigate that - they're supposed to be build aware and know all about include paths etc. For the C family this is usually done by having CMake write out a compile_commands.json file as part of its confi

I just use either gdb's tui, or the new gdb integration in vim 8, along with a few custom pretty printers for types, but you'd have to write those no matter what debugger you used. One difference is that I do not debug in the same

Tried the first demo. Couldn't select text. Couldn't right-click. Scrolling didn't work. I predict this will be what news sites are built on a few years from now in order to "protect" their content.

I don't think it would work. Aside from the ethical questions, I'm not aware of animals being used to perform complex tasks without human supervision and care. And if you have the human in there, you don't need a rat.

The entire modern web feels like someone reading that joke interview with Stroustrup and not realising it's a joke and you shouldn't actually keep piling complexity and building an infinitely tall job security tower. Or put anothe

The ones listed as options for git mergetool are all good. Personally I use kdiff3, it has a simple interface for choosing conflict resolutions and can often resolve some of them on its own.

I really hope at some point we get one official blessed GUI implementation per platform a-la gVim and we don't have to pick and choose which particular one has the least shortcomings.

People ate cheese before they drank milk. I can't look up the source right now, but the gist of it was that cheese and yogurt are older than lactose tolerance in humans.

Not UB in the slightest. You can take a pointer, cast it to uintptr_t, do whatever you want to that int, then cast it back to a pointer. It's only UB if the resulting pointer isn't valid or you cast it to the wrong type (and stric

Also, the comma operator forces a left to right evaluation order. Surprisingly, you can override it in C++. I haven't seen anyone do it, but you can. If you find a good, productive override for the comma operator, please post about it.

No, the problem is that std::vector still calls the constructor and destructor of each and every object in the array at least once. This is a performance loss if they don't do anything - you have to rely on the compiler to inline the c
