Setting aside the arguments around infringement equaling/not equaling actual theft, is the actual incidence of piracy high enough that it's on beancounters' radar? I may be wrong, but my impression is that streaming made it a

Heh, go figure. And my original question here is downvoted enough here to be sufficiently invisible. I don’t have sufficient karma to unflag your post, but I appreciate the pointer; it at least makes for good reading.

Metacommentary: I’m seeing _a lot_ more attacks on the so-called average HN user, on the HN system, etc. here than I’ve noticed in any other thread recently. What’s up with that?

Installing a ground loop is a _significant_ expense, oftentimes well beyond the reservation price for residential buyers.

You can do two things, if so inclined: I’m in the midst of having a heat pump system installed in line with my existing gas furnace, the so-called “dual fuel” approach. The heat pump should suffice for most cool days, with the furnace avail

Agreed. The posted decision (permanently DST) is stupid, but less stupid than switching.

How, then, would you define "homeless"? And does it have a different meaning from "does not have a home"? edit: Perhaps clarifying, are you using the term "homeless" to define a _state_ or a _trait_ of the pers

Came here to say roughly the same thing. That it’s Google and they’re not charging you for it can at this point be considered suspicious, if not conclusive.

Does naturalization in this particular context confer citizenship with voting rights? I’m curious if blocking shifts in the electorate is a motive for this move.

Tangential: for those of us _not_ running into functional issues with Pinboard, [Paperback]( https://readpaperback.com ) remains one of my favorite addon services for a SaaS pretty much ever. One-time payment unlocks ad-free Insta

This sounds frustrating, and it's strange that adding new accounts hasn't changed anything, but FWIW my (positively ancient, rate-grandfathered but with archiving activated later) Pinboard account continues to function as expected

s/could/would/ My layman’s understanding is that huge warheads are a less efficient usage of nuclear materiel (in terms of sheer destruction) than a larger number of mid-sized warheads.

This is a huge part of it! I spent a couple years doing IC-level failure analysis, which involves cool toys like electron microscopes, ion beams, strong destructive chemistry… a lot of it was neat, but the feedback loops were hours at best,
