This is happening on all levels: New researchers want to publish Open Access if they don’t hit Nature or Science, because that gets them more citations. Libraries push for Open Access. Permanent employees see that Open Access is how science

The Hurd needs someone to actually use its tools. For example to use subhurds to build the next great virtual hosting facility. Or to harden your own system by running your browser with minimized rights, only granting it the capability to a

No, and systemd would not add compelling features to the Hurd, since the Hurd already provides most of the advertised advantages of systemd, but cleanly integrated into the system — and has been doing so for decades. Some of the reasons for

If you want to test the Hurd quickly, just run this: wget http://people.debian.org/~sthibault/hurd-i386/debian-hurd.img.tar.gz; tar xf de*hu*gz; qemu-system-x86_64 -net user,hostfwd=tcp:127.0.0.1:2222-:22 -net

If you ever want easy-to-update, high quality documents, LaTeX is what you want. You simply see the difference between word and LaTeX. With microtype, you can easily reproduce the quality of highly paid typography-experts.

So New Incentives changed what they wanted to do because they would get paid more that way? I know this sounds harsh. This is the incentive you create: Pushing people who initially wanted to help where they see need to instead focus on help

The natural script writing syntax¹ is an example: The `Enter` Macro defines macros which use their arguments as data (no need to quote anything), but execute any part prefixed with a comma as actual code. (Enter (Arne)) (Arne (Hello!)

This looks pretty interesting. Most striking to me is that Go is taking from other 'target' languages. You can see the 5x5 block of the other strongest target languages giving to Go, but not taking from it. To make what the Eigenv

The super advantage of Lisp (including Scheme): Its format for defining data is the same as for writing code, making macros a natural part of the syntax: You can change your source code just like you’d change any other list (or rather tree)

There’s still work to be done in pre-compiling the elisp in Guile Emacs to reduce the starttime (a lot).

I regularly code over SSH, and the machine where I’m most productive at writing is a laptop clocked down to 100MHz with bare Emacs on X11. You simply cannot do that with a current-style IDE.

It’s the current maintainer who wants copyright assignment. He does not want to hand over the project to someone who refuses to lead it in a way consistent with his vision. Rather walk more slowly than walk in the wrong direction.

I don’t think so. With that argument, anyone could take over any project just because he/she has more free time than the current maintainer. Would you want someone who steps up and does a lot of work in a project you started to suddenl

“similar in spirit” is a pretty strong condition, since there are lots of philosophy texts on the GNU pages which make it clear what “similar in spirit” means. A court would likely rely on these to decide a case.

They set conditions (we will keep it free) just like any software contract where you only get the software if you promise to adhere to some rules. I don’t think the FSF ever violated the condition, so there’s nothing you can do to test whet

Copyright assignment isn’t actually required by the GNU project. It’s the maintainers choice whether to require it for the specific project or not.
