Actually, if the thread runtime maintains its own concept of time, the algorithm doesn't even need to sleep in real time. Once all the threads have been created, the thread runtime can notice that all threads are idle and that the next

You can generate the metadata in ~/.mozilla/firefox (installs.ini, profiles.ini) to have whatever profile dirs you want. Only if you let FF generate them itself will they have the unknown random names.

I don't really have any comment on whether SLES was suitable for their RHEL shop or not. This entire subthread rabbit hole is just about their absurd assumption that packages can be transplanted between distros and their subsequent dou

If you thought you could install RHEL packages on SLES, what did you think the difference between RHEL and SLES was? Also I'm not sure what "new" or "existing" users have to do with it. I've never used RHEL so

To be clear, it's not yet known for certain if the chilling effect of a terminated contract violates the "no further restrictions" clause of the GPL or not. Evidently IBM's lawyers think it doesn't. But it would be

pmOS has no intention of moving off of Alpine base, and systemd is still incompatible with musl (or vice versa, depending on which side you're on in the arguement :) ), and OpenRC works well enough for now.

This requires the application to tell the service manager to wait for some signal that it has successfully "finished starting" beyond just "the process was created". There's no standard way to do it. In systemd'

Debian has merged /usr too. At least my current Debian 12 install does, and I'm pretty sure it had it before I upgraded it from Debian 11. I believe Debian's problem is (was?) only with migrating existing pre-merge installs.

sysv init scripts are more complicated than just a list of commands to run to start the service. They have start / stop / reload functions and express dependencies. The sysv generator handles all of those. Like this jank: https:&

They could just fork the sysv-generator and continue maintaining it. (Generators are arbitrary programs that generate systemd units at runtime dynamically. Eg fstab-generator parses /etc/fstab and generates .mount units. The sysv-

It's just as well. There isn't any software on my OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (rolling distro) machines that still only has sysv scripts. My Debian 11 router had some (nginx IIRC) but those went away when I updated it to Debian 12. The mo

To be precise, there is a single installer image that you boot and use to create the partition layout. Then you pick a stage 3 tarball and unpack it into the root partition, and this tarball is either OpenRC-specific or systemd-specific. Ye

Gentoo setup involves completely different downloads depending on whether you want OpenRC or systemd. It's not like there's a single installer that you run which lets you choose between the two and has OpenRC as the default choice

If there was a portable implementation of namespaces that was implemented by both Linux and BSDs, then sure systemd could be made more portable. Otherwise the only reason OpenRC is more portable is that it does not isolate services in the f
