This is sadly misinformed. Having had to create business emails in the past, it's frankly a nightmare, and I can't agree with anyone who doesn't see that.

AFAIK they do this for all images. Not just commonly embedded images.

What makes you think that? The torrent protocol would need to fundamentally change to completely stop the older versions from working. I don't see that happening.
