Here is a good summary of how Ada deals with safety in the context of memory management: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14216128 It's not rust but at the same time I think rust has sacrificed general safety in fa

At this point if you stick to a limited subset of C++ and don't go too deep you can get a perfectly safe language which is powerful and performant. If you want a safer language with in my opinion a far better type system than anything

I don't think I've played this game for over 13 years now. Such a pleasant surprise to see it open sourced.

From how I see it T4 is already a full lockdown and iirc over half the country is in T4 already so I don't see how things can be much different in January.

Would it make much of a difference when those same device makers which it would affect normally lock down their devices completely and don't ever expose any of the functionality of the linux kernel to the end user? Would we miss out on

I get that doing APIs right is hard and that when you're trying to release a proprietary product having to worry about what libraries every system comes with may be a struggle and that if you're developing a webapp you may want ev

yt-dl exists not just for youtube, it allows users to access audio and video streams from many different websites without the overhead of a full featured web browser. But in the case of youtube, it exists to automate what can trivially be d

The "technological measure" doesn't "effectively" control anything. You can circumvent it using the inspect element feature of any modern browser. yt-dl "cirucmvents" it by executing the javascript (the sa

I don't get it. 80 columns was always short but it forced you to think about your code when it got too long. Contextually local variable names which go far above 10 characters and contextually local function names which go far above 20

Pip doesn't need to integrate, it just needs to install elsewhere or give you a way of listing what will be installed. Cargo on the other hand just doesn't even bother letting you try to use it with a distro package manager.

It sounds like you just want a good package manager. On my system I have built lots of random projects to "mess around" and to achieve the same effect of cleaning them up I can just make a list of all the packages I explicitly ins

I don't know what project this is but a blanket "add a test which fails without your patch for EVERY PATCH no exception" rule is a bit cargo-culty. Especially since the kind of test you're asking for, when written by a d

Python's build ecosystem IS sane and well-designed. It's the pinnacle of package handling so far. A separate package manager which works together with a separate build system which still works when a distribution wants to package

Really neat! Not sure why people care what it's written in. I'm pretty sure people wouldn't complain if this was a blog post written in english rather than a program written in C and python2.

The proposal you linked would not work if the specific USB interface was set up correctly to only allow a specific device (identified by a specific whitelisted USB device descriptor) to operate only with a specific driver. This internal USB
