This sounds very strange. Element X on iOS is a native Swift UI app, and for me (even in an enormous account) it’s super snappy - similar to WhatsApp or Telegram or iMessage. It’s not Electron, which is only for desktop apps; is there a cha

hm, Element X should outperform other chat apps; mine does and I’m in 5000 odd rooms. What platform and hardware are you on?

the thing that changed is that Element rewrote the mobile apps and made them not suck. Web will follow shortly: https://element.io/blog/we-have-lift-off-element-x-call-and-... etc

the $100k is to fund folks to maintain the bridge software, as well as the hardware costs of running them.

The irony is that I suspect we have fixed it - eg Element X and Matrix 2.0 is a massive step change forwards; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHyHO3xPfQU etc. But I can see why bad experiences in the past would stick.

It means that in the last few weeks, we’ve seen multiple large Matrix tenders go through the process described in the parent post, and say “hey, actually we’re just going to use your opensource stack for free.”. We were hoping to use the $

Hi folks - based on the feedback here and on Mastodon, i've updated the original blog post to try to spell out that the point of Synapse Pro is not to hold back general performance work from open source Synapse, but just eliminate scal

There are two different performance issues here. One is the stuff that Graphene is talking about, which affects all server sizes, and we are trying to fund work on to fix in FOSS Synapse - see https://news.ycombinator.com/it

FOSS Synapse already is a hybrid of Python and Rust, and has been for years - with Rust used for the hot paths. Synapse Pro is just pushing that a bit further for worker processes, by having the host process itself being Rust-first rather

Precisely. Which is why we’ve given a this strong incentive to route money to the upstream - to get access to synapse pro.

This is definitely true. It’s also completely normalised to build a large commercial service on open source and not even contemplate if or how the upstream project is funded, or consider funding the upstream a serious cost.
