Yes, I would say that making sweeping statements about a populace does require actual first-hand experience with said populace.

all those countries are effectively US vassals. Most of them have US military bases on their soil. Of course they’re going to do exactly what the US wants

There is little ideological overlap between rationalists and Rust folks (and thank god for that). IME unlike the rationalists, Rust has actually done something useful for the world, and HN’s opinion of Rust and its community has drastically

That is what is called research in theoretical fields. Making hypotheses up and then proving implications of those hypotheses. In this case, it yields a falsifiable test: the theory claims the universe should have small positive curvature.

I’m sorry, but your comment is a whole lot of horseshit. Unsafe rust still has a bunch of checks C doesn’t have, and using indices into vectors is common code in high performance code (including Zig!)

You can always fall back to unsafe. Again, there are very few workloads that C/C++ can support which Rust cannot.

    > However, for high-performance systems software specifically, objects often have intrinsically ambiguous ownership What is the evidence for this? Plenty of high-performance systems software (browsers, kernels, web servers, you name it)

PC membership is not necessary for tenure/promotion. Eg my advisor has only been on ~5 PCs in a ten-year career, and has gained tenure at two top-10 CS schools. In general it’s more of a checkmark.

Really useful article to learn about idiomatic Rust :) In general I think there is a lack of intermediate Rust material that teaches you common design patterns, idiomatic Rust, and so on. Even I (someone who's written hundreds of thous

https://github.com/emeryberger/csconferences indicates that ATC acceptance rate has averaged 20% in the last five years, so better than ~13%, but not by too much. However, at least speaking as an academic, I wouldn&#x2

I don't think academics view ATC as particularly highly prestigious. Just within systems there are many other conferences which are either more, or just as, prestigious as ATC: OSDI, SOSP, NSDI, SIGMOD, VLDB, SIGCOMM, EuroSys. Especial

Academic CS has no shortage of prestigious or even good publishing venues. Just within systems and networking, there is SOSP, OSDI, NSDI, EuroSys, PODC, DISC, FAST, SIGCOMM, CIDR. If you extend to databases there's also VLDB, SIGMOD, e

Industry already abandoned that approach 15 years ago. The only basic-research focused lab is Microsoft Research, and even that has seen massive downsizing over the last 2 decades.
