So what should it be called? There's got to be a name for it where the mark to market asset values are below that of liabilities right?

An insolvent bank would eventually end up illiquid. But an illiquid bank is not necessarily insolvent. In this case, the bank is both illiquid and insolvent. In which case we should not blame the illiquid event because it is eventual as t

The depositors didn't make the decision to turn deposits into low interest long term bonds, and hold it after interest rates have risen. They are at best a innocent party with slightly less awareness. If a drunk driver is doing 120 mph

The subject is wrong though, SVB isn't getting bailed out, their depositors are. At the end of the day, SVB as a bank would be no more/the ownership would be washed. The depositor didn't do anything wrong, they had the full r

The banks are still gone though, once they get taken over, their equity zeroes out. All owners of the bank will end up with nothing, I think that's a good enough deterrence against bad things.

It's a self fulfilling advice. Though granted, SVB is a ticking time bomb since all of their deposit went to low yield long term securities. So such a run would have been an eventuality in the current interest rate. The question is, wh

Simple vs Complex should always be evaluated holistically. Each file could be simple but if they are in 5 level of inheritance, then it's not simple as a whole. Same with 10 different way to do the same thing or 3 different class that
