Vim should learn from psql, not even ctrl+d works there.

Wanted to state the main idea first. I definitely agree about one-liners, Perl and APL come to mind. There are some other aspects to this idea of code economy: correctness and reusability. This definitely depends on the programming language

What that kind of people need to understand is that "code is a liability, not an asset". Every piece of adhoc code is added maintenance cost, hence the less code the better, no matter the programming language or paradigm.

Code doesn't have to look like that, look at the Haskell version: gcd x y | x == y = x | x > y = gcd (x - y) y | otherwise = gcd x (y - x) Much more close to the math notation.

I learned this through Haskell, it enforces the "functional core, imperative shell" approach through the IO monad. Now I find myself repeating the same pattern in other languages(js, java).

Kinda the same reason why I only used an Ergodox EZ for a couple days. I realized that collaboration is hard and also wasted too much time configuring it. Restrictions do free sometimes.

The db is not only about tables, there's a reason why views exist, the users/managers should only query views, these are easy to change whenever the underlying private schema changes.

I like js, but I won't sacrifice all the performance aspects in the sole name of productivity. Node(nor any GC lang) is simply not designed for embedded dev. I'll gladly switch to C or Rust that are designed for this kind of work.

If you want to be passionate about a piece of software, make sure it's OSS.

I have the same thoughts when seeing comments like "I switched to VSCode from Vim and I couldn't be happier". Almost all software development articles on HN are feeling more like advertising than honest opinions nowadays.

Honest question, how can I know if this type of comments are not something like paid advertising more than an honest review? Most vim users chose it because they're borderline anti-IDEs, it's really strange to me that you chose

I grow tired of "written in Go" or "written in Python". At least Rust means high performance and no GC.

Happened to me last last year, an openssl upgrade broke many of my projects, and wasted a couple of days trying to fix it with no luck, had to resort to docker to get them working again(not a good DX). I don't use Arch as my daily driv

I feel depressed about this, on how the industry promotes and even supports extreme technical incompetence. Maybe is a consequence of "everyone should learn to code" campaigns and bootcamps.

In Peru we have an equivalent phrase for "rouba mas faz", the "roba pero hace obra", also a popular justification that got a corrupt major elected for Lima, even when major media outlets showed proofs of corruption.

Absolutely. I think the actual issue are the OSes directory structure(FHS for example) that impedes having libs/packages isolated and coexisting with their different versions. Containers add a heavy abstraction on top of that. For me t

For the dependency hell management part, nix is a solution that operates at a lower cost level of abstraction, it doesnt emulate the whole OS(avoiding overhead) and keeps dependencies isolated at the filesystem level(under /nix). I thi

You could also use nix to handle all languages dependencies(including OS packages) and avoid the complexity of handling disparate package managers.
