That is the art of photography: the challenge of capturing the emotional context in a way that conveys it to a random viewer, drawing on common elements of culture, nostalgia, etc.

They could redesign it to be globally compliant. As it stands now, its too big and heavy and can't be sold outside North America, even though it has supporters in other countries.

The fact that it uses "Firecracker microVMs" and a few other things makes me think this is an S3-backed Lambda-based database that emulates Postgres on the wire. Especially when you consider the recent feature additions to S3.

Like cockroachdb but with REPEATABLE READ instead of SERIALIZABLE as the default and only option.

This is likely to happen in the case that your hardware is telling lies about when it has committed data to disk. In this case, it makes sense to cut short the WAL application, but you are probably right in saying it should throw an error (

Or, to flip it, what is your reason for being biased against solitude? Isn't the pressure to be in a relationship just a form of "expectation" and/or "entitlement"?

I see, so you're saying static cling "at a distance" is different to the interaction of positive and negative charges in a chemical reaction?

Agreed - A place I worked needed 24/7 uptime for financial transactions, and we still managed to keep scaling a standard MySQL database, despite it getting hammered, over the course of 10 years up to something like 64 cores and 384GB o

What is holding the tape to itself, what is making it sticky, if not chemistry?

When objects collide or are separated, aren't we really just witnessing tiny chemical reactions, all involving the absorption and/or release of energy?

I don't know the specs, but since they control both ends of the link, (ie. the client-side router) they've done a remarkable job of smoothing out load imbalances to make it highly usable even under problematic conditions.

Worth noting S3 recently added conditional writes: https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2024/08/amazon-s3...

There should be a middle ground. The Elasticsearch Go API is one of those auto-generated ones that only covers the bare basics, not helpful for constructing complex searches or parsing responses. A higher-level library + structures are ne

That is amusing, similar experience at my university in Australia, the systems got busy when it was time to submit assignments, but the one Alpha server for some reason was always quiet. Something about it scared people off?

Seeing your name pop up was a blast from the past for me too - I used to read back in the "The Business of Software" days.. circa 2005 I think?

Yeah - I suspect if you look at the kilojoules of gas your houses consume, these numbers would look small in comparison.

Because currently cost of goods would make it cost almost as much as a bigger car, making it look like terrible value.

Amazingly, no. I thought we were going to have to, but our natural usage peaks at about 20 to 30kWh per day, and we can generate far more than that on a sunny day. Thanks to the oversized PV array, we generate power even in cloudy conditio

OK. we're using about 20 to 30kWh per day (depending how much heating or cooling is needed). But with no gas.

We have a diesel generator but its only needed a few days a year; even with regular testing it only goes through about one jerry can a year, far less than we use for transport (would love an EV!)

A 250L tank with a 3.6kW electric heater element, programmed to turn on when batteries hit 98% full (and off again when batteries fall below 95%). We really only use it for short showers, and it stays warm enough for that, for about 3 days

No problem, I'm happy to share all the info. People need to hear how easy it is to do this with the latest technology. 122 kWh per day ? That can't be right.. does that include gas or something?

100% disconnected; it was cheaper this way (grid was too far away). What is the typical kWh/day consumption of a household there in winter months?

My household of 3 is off-grid, running off a 15kW PV array and 24kWh of LiFePO4 batteries, with 100% electric appliances and hot water. (Location is mid-latitude Australian, plenty of sunlight most of the time)
