They have two big problems: 1. lack of efficiency - only 80% roundtrip, much less than Lithium. 2. they go completely offline for periodic maintenance. This is done automatically by Redflow, but the loss of availability is problematic in s

Its a very small % of die space. Hardly any power compared to the rest of the CPU. [Edit:] I got deja vu, searched my comment history, and found we were still harping on about this exact same crap 9 years ago: https://news.ycomb

The limiting factor of Optane is actually the controller. The power consumption of the controller itself, as well as the costs of getting high bandwidth to and from CPU and memory. Current products are striking a conservative balance and

Intel really don't do anything unless they already have a market for it. They have bundled with Xeons in the past. If there turns out to be a market (which comes down to tools and cloud platform to make this existing tech much more acc

Worth mentioning that elastic.co themselves run a hosted service on AWS that is of a high quality and has none of these flaws.

I was referring to actual execution of bytecode in parallel, not just support for vectorized math.

It represents an average, of clocks per sample. For example when in the C3 to C6 states, the clock is stopped so would be effectively zero during those tiny periods.

Apparently it can present itself as actual system RAM to the host, in a different NUMA segment to the CPU.

Australia has laws about this: eg. If you do >80% of your work for one company, you are an employee for all tax/employment law purposes.

Thankfully Intel has already done alot of new work in this area - allowing PCI devices (GPU, Xeon Phi) etc, to share computing resources more evenly.

Although the technological aspect may cease to advance, I think for a lot longer after 3-6 years, things will continue to get cheaper, and this will hide what is happening for consumers for at least a decade.

I agree (re: favoring Apple's model). Whether server or mobile, there'll be fewer SKUs, and those that exist need to be blockbuster hits. It may well be that economics is the limiting factor stopping Intel's long run, not th

On the bright side: There are worse things than a processor lockup (which is easy to spot when it happens). And the other bug was in the newest architecture (Skylake) and did not affect Xeons. Arguably the memory Row Hammer exploit was fa
