Ok, so the answer is, "because Rubyists have redefined that phrase"? ;-) Well, by name dropping I was hoping to avoid the appearance of that. :-) Fowler certainly writes about Ruby a lot, but I'd hope he's perceived as general enou

Haml is an external DSL. Sinatra is an internal DSL. Rubyists insist on using the term so much because Ruby's linguistic flexibility makes it easy to define them, so they're constantly doing it. Martin Fowler is often credited with coming

I really debated whether or not to upvote this. I'm guessing that HN has a higher percentage of people who like (or at least know of) Randi than the general public, so it certainly fits the "general interest" guideline. But I'd also (like

Well, after that much of an XML binge, it's going to take them awhile to go through detox. We just have to be patient and loving and make sure they get the help they need and are kept away from the bad influences/vendors.

I was interested at first, but it seemed more and more that the author was referring to a context that he thought was shared but was actually obscure. When using examples from novels I've read or exchanges between bloggers, I find some lig

Agreed—I've watched many events, shown in their entirety, where the US (and often Canada) were not even factors. E.g. just recently I've seen multiple biathlon and cross country skiing events where Europeans dominate. There's cursory ment

Poppycock: when a company decides that it doesn't want to be seen as demeaning to women by profitting off of the sale of pornography (a highly subjective label, but one that they're going to take to safest, most conservative definition of)

I agree with both points. In addition, from the sound of the article, it seems like the biggest problem with having 80k employees is the jealousy and feudalism at the management level when it comes to actually implementing the great ideas

I's say it's reasonable to think that it will always be around as long as someone has the code and the ability to compile it. It probably won't be the VCS of choice in 30 years, but for people with that kind of interest, I'm sure it'll be

I think it's fair to say that Git is going to be a major tool for software archeology and cultural studies of our little subculture. I can almost imagine someone reading through Rails commits in 30+ years who will have no idea what a LOLCa

I love how that guy was so incensed that they'd devoted so much to iPods instead of making better servers. Just imagine a world with no iPods, but beefier Xserves... Oh, and Apple going out of business before 2005.

It's ironic that Steve's much criticized initial suggestion of "why don't you make web apps?" in lieu of an SDK when the iPhone first came out is now more and more acceptable. Certainly Safari advances and all the negativity about the appr

Out of curiousity, how does the industry not have to fulfill Cal/OSHA now? Is it that performers are not currently employees and the proposed law would change that?
