I'm not disagreeing with your point but I think it's a bit out of context here. The parent comment was specifically talking about what they heard from Renaissance Technologies, not a some hipster startup.

You should read all the context before stating that this comment thread means the system is broken. Just because extremely self-motivated individuals now have readily available resources to learn almost anything on their own does not mean t

Renaissance Technology has been around decades and is one of the biggest hedge funds in the world. I don't think it qualifies as an early-stage company.

People usually work for 30 years... Grad school is definitely a long term investment but it's not always the best choice. As you said, in the end you have to do what's right for you.

At some of the larger tech companies the salaries for scientists/researchers is usually higher than for engineers specifically because of the extra educational requirements. Where I work there are actually on two separate pay scales to

I wouldn't extrapolate too far from those horror stories you heard. My experience was nothing like what you describe. Plus there are many reasons to get a PhD other than going into academia and when you're a grad student you don&#

I believe it's reconstructed from the Latex source, which is how every paper is submitted to the ArXiv. Not to diminish this site but I'm guessing that generating HTML from Latex is a lot easier than doing it from PDF format.

Just a clarification: galaxy rotation curves and the observed expansion of the universe are not really related. The empirically observed expansion of the Universe is the motivating evidence for the existence of Dark Energy. Dark Matter, whi

You can't compare an adjunct professor to a full-time (assistant/associate/full) professor. I would not consider adjunct professors to be 'academics' as they do not typically do any research. They're basically

Those are not full professors, they're assistant and associates as well. Adjunct professors are a different story b/c that is not meant to be a full time job. Adjunct professors typically teach a single course and do not do any re

Not the numbers I mentioned. I was referring to the salaries in the physics department (my department). And I wasn't limiting my search to full professors. There are plenty of assistant and associate professors making well over 100k.

I mentioned this in another comment but it's worth reiterating: IDE's and vim are not mutually exclusive. Every IDE offers a vim mode or vim plugin that gives you the best of both worlds.

Aside from the other comments, you're missing a huge part of what vim is about if you think that it's vim vs. every other IDE. I use IDE's but I use a vim plugin in every single one to enable the vim key binding so I can enjo

University of California salaries are shared publicly. I haven't actually crunched the numbers but it seems like an average salary is around 150k for professors in research based fields. That's well over half of the median salary

My aunt gave me the Klein Stein for graduation (a klein bottle in the shape of a beer mug). It's actually not that hard to clean. You rinse it with water and then bake it in the oven at ~200F for an hour and you're good to go. It
