It's PHP on Yii Framework, with quite a bit of page caching. I do love Rails, but I miss the kickarse performance of PHP. Ads are there, are you sure you don't have adblock on?

http://thebigeat.com Generates around $8k per year in Adsense and slowly rising. Plenty of potential to actually do something with it. I wouldn't even think of selling it for less than $60k as it's an asset returning 13% on that amount.

USV are such a positive force on the community, it gives me pleasure to see them do well. This isn't just a 50x return on $5m cash/a good investment/ripe market/competent founder. It's a return on USV's approach to business: being open on

But the daft thing about iMessage is that no-one even knows they are using it. Most non-tech people I know don't even know there are two types of message. They've installed Whatsapp to message their friends on iPhones. When I say that iM

HN kicks up an almighty fuss about any attempts to regulate our industry (see online payments, sales taxes, etc.) but we are happy to pass judgement on others. In Europe we can barely stop people from selling horsemeat as beef. I'm not sur

While at university I managed to get a contract to temporarily install covert CCTV recording equipment to catch staff stealing from a chain of UK retailers. I wasn't making much money until I discovered I could park outside a local swimming

This exact concept was done very well by a HNer two years ago: http://dittokey.com/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2391571 - Show HN: DittoKey - Door keys copied from a photo app. For my money it's a cool idea, but an overtechnica

I don't see much talk about Apple these days (dispute if you like, but it's not long since half the front page was dominated). The stock is down 33% over six months, with no sign of a turnaround. I'm not sure what my thoughts are any more.

Ah this is so shit. I want to support Linode, I've had nothing but a good experience. But I just had to check my credit card to be sure they hadn't lost my details. I've NEVER had to do that before with anyone - they've got to respond fa

...full-time job... In a way that's my point - it's probably a 5 hour job to print a replacement plastic peg for some toy. 5 hours is $100 for anyone who can afford a 3D printer. Plus the printer's cost. Financially it makes no sense.

I've been calling overbuzz on 3D printing from the outset, and this story does nothing to dispel that. These mostly aren't practical things - they're just tat. And guess what? You can make tat a lot more cheaply, quickly and creatively t

Sounds between acceptable (Central London) and good to me. With an 18yo there's the risk that you decide to ship out to uni, travel the world, or are bonkers but no-one's noticed yet.

I would absolutely love to do this. But it's going to be very difficult - toeing a line between trading while insolvent, keeping suppliers on board, and trying to recapitalise an unproven business. There are plenty of distressed investors

Absolutely. I'd love to have you down, and will certainly keep you refreshed. Later down the line perhaps we can get a microbrewery going in a corner of the workshop! My absolute dream would be to have a bit of an open workshop for people

We have an incredible 4000sq ft olive grove at the top of the 48 storey Beetham Tower in rainy Manchester. The architect turned the top two floors into his own penthouse, complete with enclosed olive trees. Picture: http://www.bbc.co.uk/m
