I'm sorry, but that's a silly question. Assume the following: 1. first child. 2. standard spread of non-child-related stressors (money, job, relationship, illness, family). 3. standard spread of impulse control across the population 4. slee

I think jcw's point was that while vim has these features, no additional features are really required. I interprete the exchange this way: question "how does it stack up". answer: "meets minimum bar".

Except if you double-click the slides (for editing). Then the formatting is fixed. But yeah, it's a drag if you happen to be using IE7.

David Marr is amazing. I remember being completely awed by Vision. I think more than any other author, Marr showed that cognition could be made computationally tractable (focus on vision, but before him it was just a mess). I don't know tha

The order is logical, it maps to the way many americans speak. E.g. July 4th, 2000, which is always spoken as ... er... the 4th of july, 2009. Well. uh. Bad example.

That article is worth posting to HN. Please do so. It seems just obvious to me that a frank discussion about the economics of health care would be a prerequisite for health-care reform.

Actually, electric wheelchairs are superior for this purpose. People with mobility issues generally aren't going to want to stand for the 5-10 minutes. I've never ridden one, but if it requires core strength at all to lean-steer, then tha

My naive concern has always been about the fallout of a spectacular launch fail of the sort that involves fuel rods spread over a large area. If this is a solved problem, then my fears are unfounded. Let me know.

The redfin UI needs to be massively cloned for location based services. Honestly, I love craigslist, but when I'm looking for houses to rent, I want to specify a polygon on a map. Maybe it's just me.

This is interesting. I wonder if it means anything more than "depressive people are those that are unable to let go of failure"? Seems like an apt description of many generally depressed people I know. Side note: Anyone have thoughts on whe

I believe the time taken to write tests for things that have never failed is wasted. Yes yes yes. I've seen a lot of tests that, if they failed, would have meant that a thousand other tests would have also failed, and that test w

Here's an example 1. write a sed script that strips out html-tags from arbitrary, well-formed HTML. It's pretty hard to fail to notice that 5 people used the one-liner from http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/unix/sed.html , but can't expl

I TA'd and taught an intro to unix course at UCSC a couple of times. We found that repeatedly pointing out the tools that we'd use to catch duplication (grep/sed/awk), and show how they worked was the only thing that reduced the cheating

I recommend checking out [unlocking the clubhouse]( http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&... ). It goes into this in significant detail. Too much detail for me dredge up from my read of it 3 years ago.

Three points. 1. Practicing writing 140 character messages makes you better at writing 140 character messages. It's a point of faith that this skill will transfer to longer works. 2. A better title would be "Twitter as a framework for pract

Thank you for that thoughtful response. While I suspect we disagree on many points, I too think that dealing directly with the disenfranchisement would have been a more important lesson/exploration.

This idea was suggested by Paul Buchheit in July. I think it's a good idea. I occasionally hit 'send' when I mean 'delete' and once I do, that's it, it's sent. PB's original idea was that just about every action should be undo-able. The ori
