You are probably using one of the IRC bridges that is on the matrix.org server. The matrix.org server is having a lot of problems with being DDoSed as well as not being able to keep up with the normal traffic. The next generation homeserver

Well Riot (Matrix and indirectly IRC client) has pinned messages and will soon have message threading but it is a web app (although it does have native mobile apps).

There are plenty of public matrix servers, most notably matrix.org hosted by the matrix developers. There is also a small list here: https://www.hello-matrix.net/public_servers.php You don't have to host your own serve
