Whoops, that's a pretty big oversight. I was aware that the C64 had vblank and timer interrupts, but not that it could do hblank interrupts.

I'm not as knowledgeable about the Amiga as I am about other classic systems, but the Copper was (according to Wikipedia) a component of the Amiga's graphics coprocessor that took very simple commands that one could make "programs" out of t

Very cool stuff. Trying to figure out how various classic (mostly Sega Genesis, in my case) games pulled off their graphical effects was endlessly entertaining as a teenager. It's a shame that the art of cycle-accurate raster techniques had

Maybe not as much when compared to piracy of new releases, but very little? That's simply not true. How do you explain the majority of modern independent music being heavily inspired by 80s pop and 90s hip-hop, especially when most of the

Well, posting an angry rant is beneficial in at least one way: It's guaranteed to be read by all the kernel devs. Hell, we're reading it, and I doubt everyone on HN is a kernel dev or follows their mailing list. If Linus had been more polit

On my desktop (using Chrome), I have about 50 tabs open, which is apparently using about 3 gigs of memory (EDIT: and certainly even more of the address space when you count memory mapped files). Granted, I have heard that Firefox uses less

IIRC, Valve negotiates a different cut with each developer, and requires them to keep their terms secret. I would not be surprised if Activision ended with more favorable terms than your average indie studio.

I don't know how it compares to the modern scene, but there was definitely a large amount of RTS modding and mapmaking going on long before 2005. Particularly for the old Command and Conquer games, which were much more accessible to modders

The existence of r/4chan is met with scorn every time I've seen it mentioned on 4chan. People seem to either completely hate Reddit itself, or meekly admit that they follow a few tiny subreddits. Given that (and the response you received to

I'd usually agree (grey text on a light background, anyone?), but honestly I'm much more interested in combating the trend of obscuring content with floating navigation bars than I am in yet another story about Tim Cook and Apple.
