I mean, it's neat that you can build everything out of cons, in the sense that it's neat that Turing machines and the lambda calculus can perform any computation, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to so in your co

Slightly misleading, they don't actually run Racket on the PS3. IIRC, they created a DSL for game logic in Racket and wrote a special compiler for that DSL. That's still a good example of a "real" program written in Rack

My question is, given the cons pair is not a meaningful primitive datatype to modern CPUs (can't fit in a register unless you're using 32 bit atoms on a 64 bit CPU, the individual cells cannot be meaningfully manipulated while pac

A 24-bit sample depth is not completely useless and silly in the way that gold plated HDMI cables are. You can get a real improvement in dynamic range with 24-bit samples, allowing a song to have quiet parts and loud parts with no loss in

Is Super Mario Bros. a kernel? Every NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis, etc... game ran on the "bare metal" without anything resembling an OS (or even a BIOS, really).

If I came across as downplaying the adoption of H.264, it wasn't my intent. Pretty sure Firefox doesn't support H.264 out of the box on Linux, though. I couldn't wrangle the gstreamer plugin into displaying it either.

That would require either replacing malloc as well, or programming to the hairy details of your system's libc (ie knowing how and where it lays out the buffer metadata). The point is not that either are impossible, but that you can

I'm pretty sure h264 is the superior codec in all regards except for that pesky license issue. It encodes faster and creates smaller files that look better. From (lead x264 developer and HN user) DarkShikari[1]: "Overall, VP8 appe

How do you virtualize an FPGA? A GPU can be virtualized and shared between several processes. It takes waaay too long to flash an FPGA to implement time-division multiplexing on it. All you can do is "slice up" the FPGA and give d

Angry Birds is not a terribly involved or demanding game, and the hard part, 2D physics simulation, is handled in C by the Box2D library anyway. It requires no real-time control, you just aim the bird and watch the reaction. You could half
