Spaceflight Now is reporting that no meaningful telemetry was picked up, but a signal was acquired. They're going to try again from Perth today: http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1111/23phobosgrunt/

In a recent press conference (think it was this one: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/18431005 ) one of the MSL engineering managers was asked this question. He said it's because of both the weight of MSL and the landing accuracy requirement

Theoretically, maybe, but it's not very practical. You need to have very good ground truth (i.e. know exactly how wide that street is) and the spacecraft needs to be directly above Manhattan, otherwise tall buildings will obscure your calib

> An added question is whether people speed more in a closed community or in a grid. I live on a cul de sac and not a day goes by that I don't see someone speeding through the stop sign a few houses down. The cul de sac is not what appe

That's great in theory, but given the absurdities of my dealings with my insurance company for my individual plan, I sometimes long for the days when I had a group plan. Example: I was recently informed that I'm now one mile outside of thei

I was out walking and the first thing I noticed here in VA was the house next to me making shake-apart kinds of noises. I was next to a steel railing and the quake must have found its sympathetic frequency because that thing was vibrating l

Upvoted you both. I did do a little research before interpreting the original "sour grapes" that way. I, too, think there's room for debate about that interpretation, but I stand by it. Thanks for the exposition.

I don't have much of a problem with the occasional day trip across the country. I know folks who have to do that on occasion, and it can be appropriate. The whole blog entry, though, represents a wastefulness that I couldn't myself condone.

One thing Flickr has going for it is photos aren't so closely tied to a user's identity. I'm a bit of a photography buff, a Flickr Pro user for years, and I'm not sure I want my photographs to be in the same place where I update friends a

Yes, but what's interesting about this are the mechanisms of formation and delivery. We have evidence of how these things were formed in space and then delivered to Earth. It's not little green men, but a piece of the puzzle. I think it's p

I was able to see two shuttle launches at KSC: a night launch and John Glenn's return to space. The comedic timing also works from the non-VIP viewing area there. Just as you're starting to furrow your brow and wonder if some acoustical law

I've been using the developer previews, including the GM, and OpenGL performance seems to be better. Haven't run any proper tests, but my 3D stuff does seem zippier in most cases. Still, I'll probably wait until XCode functions okay before

I didn't have games in mind, really. I am not developing one. I would suggest Apple could do a better job of keeping up to date with more recent OpenGL specifications. In fact, I am suggesting it.

Another thing that isn't exactly helping OpenGL is Apple's slow creeping adoption of recent versions. I'm running the latest Snow Leopard and my code is reporting OpenGL 2.1. I'm not really blaming Apple. I mean, on top of the core version

I agree with you, but I just wanted to provide a minor counterpoint to the doom and gloom. There are innumerable ways to screw up, but we are not left entirely out in the cold (standing naked in a parking lot) by the compilers.
