Maybe you're overinterpreting the parent commenter, who makes a valid point. I read it as: This reminds us of our (increasing?) dependence on systems operated by opaque and fragile entities that, on top of it all, may have goals at odd

I'm all for an Ubuntu phone, almost to the point of shelling out, but I'm not sure I'd get a commensurate benefit from this phone. I would probably go for it if it weren't for remote desktop apps like iTeleport. Pull out

Ignoring the images, the physical descriptions in this seem badly wrong. For instance, can any WiFi modulation scheme be described as, "The crests of waves is [sic] translated to a 1 by a computer, and the troughs equal a 0."?

I've been a fan of his since the '90s. I once had the opportunity while visiting a relative in Boston to ask Sheldon in person at the shop where he worked (Harris Cyclery) if he could help me find a rather obscure part for my old

I have a hard time believing the US authorities want anyone to detain Snowden besides US authorities. He is, presumably, sitting on a big pile of classified but as-yet-unreleased information. Pure speculation (what fun!): perhaps Hong Kon

A depressing historical fact: The FISA Court that for the past decade has been warped into a protective shield for these sorts of operations was established in 1978 to prevent this from happening again. See: Project SHAMROCK, http://en.w

According to the timeline in the presentation, Apple was the last to cave. It happened after Steve Jobs' died.

Interesting to note that Apple held out until after Steve Jobs' death.

It's worth pointing out that they still have terabytes of data on the ground that hasn't been sifted through, so even if the spacecraft's mission isn't resurrected, we can still expect to hear about new Kepler discoveries over the next year

The difference here is that it appears we are meant to believe a character in the movie wrote the code. I may be wrong since it's hard to tell from a promo what is happening, except for LOTS OF EXPLOSIONS.

I think you're being unfair. I don't know how large the crew is for those events, but I'd venture to say all would call themselves "outreach people". I take your point that a lot of what airs is not very good, but to throw all outreach effo

Have you ever watched a rocket launch on NASA TV? For me, it doesn't get much more thrilling than that. And I've seen some in person.

I'm criticizing the journalist for writing drivel. I am perfectly willing to believe Elon is a jackass in his personal life. But does any of this have a bearing on the matter at hand?

I believe that from a bang-for-the-buck perspective, Near-Earth Object monitoring is one of the better values. In the scheme of national budgets, it is CHEEEEEP to deploy a ground-based observatory capable of detecting threatening objects.

Precisely. How many Model S owners are going to call Tesla for regular recharging advice vs. taking 20 seconds to pull up a smart phone app that shows them nearby charging stations?

On several occasions I've had to judiciously use A/C in hot weather in my petrol powered car, so that sort of power/thermal management seems to be a "real negative" of cars in general.

I've never had a case on my iPhones (3G, 3GS), dropped them numerous times on concrete, and the only thing that put one out of commission was dropping the 3G in a toilet. Replaced it with a 3GS in 2009 and it still functions perfectly. Admi

I think your definition of "gamer" is different from mine. We don't all play the AAA titles. I write 3D code for mobile devices, and I'm continually astonished by what these things are capable of, i.e. your comment about poker and Farmville
