If you generalise enough, all comparisons become useless: Sure, all Sapiens have common ancestors. That doesn’t take away from the wonder of imagining people thousands of years ago literally travelling across half the earth to settle somewh

Again, you being right doesn’t change anything. This is the world we live in, and that means we need to work with what we have. Which includes inattentive parents.

I trust the EU for one, yes, because it doesn't really have the capability or agencies to create massive databases on citizens. Aside from that, there's really a lot of research going on around zero knowledge proofs and verified c

Don't project the contemporary US administration on other countries, please. Not everyone lives in a cynical regime.

It’s not about wrongthought, but manipulation and deception, blended with advertisements exploiting child psychology, coupled with peer pressure.

That sounds great in principle, but many parents are either not interested or present enough to do so, or themselves lack the skills for it.

But then again, should the EU follow up with a similar policy, it could mandate the use of these checks and prevent/penalize ID photos. I’m very optimistic here.

The major headline in response over here in Europe was "the transatlantic relationship is dead now". It’s so confounding, and needlessly destructive.

Both, kind of. The demand to have at least a rough estimate when something will be available is justified IMHO—other departments obviously need to maintain their own timelines and schedule work that depends on output from engineering. Also,

Sure you can move the goalposts here, but OP clearly meant to say software tasks cannot be estimated because people only work on novel problems, since everything else is "not worth doing" (what a massively privileged thing to say

All of that is besides the point. People need to estimate their tasks if their managers want them to, and no amount of philosophical navel-gazing will change that.

That's a double-edged sword, though. Those tax dollars don't just pay for the license, but for ongoing development, responsibility for security issues, support contracts, emergency personnel, and so on. With a purely Open Source s

It’s amazing how similar legislation is to software engineering in that regard: It all comes down to managing complexity. A good law is achieving its effect with as little special case handling in as few lines as possible while covering mos

A better solution would be to make taxes and parking cost relative to vehicle size/weight. Want a big SUV? Pay 4x the taxes and hefty parking fees. Drive a small, electric commuter vehicle? Half the tax, reduced parking.
