Maybe I wasn't clear; I'm not talking about comments on random threads about climate change suggesting it could be solved easily if people just didn't have kids. I don't think it's unreasonable, though, to suggest n

Yes - it's not surprising to me that few people are willing to consider adopting or living a 'childfree' lifestyle, only that the suggestion that doing so is an extremely effective way to reduce your carbon footprint is recei

Pointing out the environmental impact of having biological children is always unpopular here. A lot of HN-ers are pretty attached to the 'three kids and a white picket fence' lifescript. Interestingly advocates of veganism (which

The cynic in me thinks the reason fossil energy companies are keen to invest in wind and solar is that they don't believe it can operate independently of natural gas backup any time in the near future and they want to secure some basel

Thanks for the suggestions - we ended up using Applescript with Outlook and cURL since that's what he knew how to do and that wound up being much simpler than I expected.

The CVR also records other sounds that are audible in the cockpit - alarms, warnings and notifications, but also the sound of eg. a control cable snapping. I'd guess that was what they heard that was especially useful in this case.

True, and I'd like to see this corrected with carbon pricing ASAP. My point is simply that whether or not intermittent renewables can ever cost-effectively deliver baseload power is still an open question.

LCOE is a poor measure of whether something can deliver baseload power cost effectively because it assumes all MWh are created equal. What would make it clear whether solar + battery at this proportion is a viable source of baseload power i

In the short term maybe? A forward shift in age threshold is essentially a one-time reduction to expected future pension expenditures, whereas the triple lock and increasing post-retirement life expectancy are continuous increases.

UK state pensions obey the so-called 'Triple Lock' rule where they increase in payout yearly according to the greatest of: 1. the growth in national average earnings; 2. the growth in retail prices as measured by the Consumer

This reminds me of Goodhart's Law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." It seems like in the case of employees at a company, just knowing that a parameter is being measured can result in it impli

AMD is using a kind of modular processor architecture which, as I understand it, makes the chips easier / less expensive to fab than an Intel design of comparable size, so it seems like the two factors are intertwined. I don't kno
