I have firefox installed on Linux. There is no /etc/firefox/policies/ dir, nor indeed even an /etc/firefox/ dir. Therefore, no need for sudo.

Have to say that I don't encounter any problems pinging hosts in AWS. If any host is firewalling out ICMP then it won't be pingable but that does not depend on the hosting provider. AWS is no better or worse than any other in that

Sure, but the default for any app should be to use the setting from the OS/DE/WM and only diverge from that if the user consciously decides to alter it in the app's settings (in whichever direction).
