Nokia is a company with over 100 years of success behind it, and it approaches new products with the concomitant confidence: they really believe the engineers will be able to pull off whatever the marketers come up with. (Even after, as the

I suspect the worst software is the kind where the person buying it is not the person using it. This might also explain Apple's recent successes.

This is pretty harsh, but you're right: it was always sub-par, with some compelling features. As a long-time BBEdit (and thus Mac) user, my impression was Textmate appealed to "switchers" who may not have been aware of better options. I tri

As the article indicates, the data wasn't destroyed, just obscured. Maybe equivalent for some users, but somewhat overstating things, especially here.

I would expect a decent third-party solution to scan for folders like this, just as every third-party browser grabs (or at least offers to grab) Safari's data.

Would this be the Steve Jobs who ditched floppy disk drives when people still had piles of disks around, and Firewire ports when people still had plenty of devices requiring them, etc.?

Outlook has a captive audience. I suspect email in non-business contexts will fade from common use before a decent email client comes along. Or maybe it will be for "fmail" instead.

The people who have never seen a reel-to-reel tape deck are already avidly using Apple technology. They may puzzle over this aspect of the UI, but they already know how to make it work with the more familiar controls (which are also availab

Apple has in the past charged outrageous prices for RAM upgrades, but lately has come more in line with aftermarket prices if you factor in what you might consider an installation or "convenience" fee.

Even using Mac IE5 (the best browser for Macs in its time) I sometimes had to fake the user agent to use some sites. So I also felt a little twinge of schadenfreude on reading this.

Yeah, I hear a lot of complaining about Apple here, but not much about how Dropbox's SDK update broke apps that would otherwise be approved, and now Dropbox has a new version that fixes the problem.

I expect they're also targeting a lot of senior (read: high-salary) employees who are more likely to be the family bread-winner types. (Although for legal reasons Yahoo! will go to great pains to point out that they are not in any way targe

Having explored a lot of app bundles this way, I can report that many iOS apps have shaders and other similar files (e.g., plists, HTML files) stored as plain text in the bundle. PNG files are obfuscated, but that's reversible: http://www.

After noting my rather older MBP with 8GB RAM was outperforming my new iMac, I spent $16 for 4GB of RAM (doubling the total to 8GB); the iMac's performance improved immeasurably. By far the best bang for the buck on OSX is maxing out the RA

"Men don't like to be called that either though..." That was my point: the intended offense is partly in feminizing the man, as if being feminine is bad in itself.

Well, by some stretch it is: this is a word most women don't like to be called, and when referring to men, at least part of the offense is that it's bad to be a woman.

It's minimizing the offense a great deal to call the word "bitches" a "swear" and not misogyny.
