I'm pretty sure there were some good points in there, it was just hard to notice them for all the swearing. Hmm.

Beautifully concise! That would normally be about a chapter per-paragraph in most C++ resources around. Well done :)

This kind of thing is admirable in a machiavellian evil kind of way. It is amazing to think of the thought & effort that goes into making a title as infuriatingly awful (yet unarguably profitable) as some of these ville/hotel/zoo grindi

Minor quibble accepted! It's easy to forget how crap PC graphics were at the time of Commander Keen. It was the first PC platform game I can remember that wasn't an obviously-CGA sprite flickerathon :)

While I would agree that Doom3 was a casualty of the effect you outline, most of the stuff Carmack is working on now is very much within the realm of current & future hardware. The megatexture tech is a clever use of 'clipmaps' or virtu

And that is an argument that has merit. The counter to that would be that if you hadn't noticed this pattern by now with recent id games you haven't been paying attention. To say that id's releases are more tech demos than games is one thin

I will agree with one thing from the article, he's John freakin' Carmack . This is a man who has been pushing the boundaries of realtime graphics since Wolfenstein3D. We owe him a lot, and I think he has earned the right to work on whateve

Ooh, now this looks promising. Having done Cocos2d development for a while now I like the sound of this and will definitely give it a try. I'd be super impressed if there was built in support for shaders too (there is support in Cocos2d 2.0

Seriously, this. It sounds like glib advice, but you don't know what you don't know until faced with a real problem that has to be solved. Good programmers aren't the ones who know everything already. Good programmers solve problems . Tryi

Agreed 100%. Someone, somewhere will have to program all these wonderful gadgets. While it is conceivable that all development will occur only inside big mega-corps, I somehow doubt it. People have a voracious appetite for new content. Smar

That is a great example of a genius/cheeky hack to fit a big world into tiny memory. Thanks for that, made me smile & shake my head at the same time :)

Yet by any other conceivable metric it is a huge success. I love good code & elegant design, but it doesen't beat having a successful product out there. Remember, shipping is a feature ;)

I'm pretty sure the original was done by digitising video frames & tidying them up. There probably weren't many people doing motion capture as we know it today in 1992.

WebGL is going to be huge very soon. Developers that are fluent with the technology are going to be in high demand once more people know what you can do & stuff like this is what everyone wants. Time to get reading!

This is really sad. Dennis Ritchie has made an incalculably huge contribution to the tech world. I know most here would be aware, but he is a father of both Unix and the C language, technologies which are the basis for nearly everything we

Even though the Dart hate is the most recent example, I think the issue of negativity & trolling is much larger than one new language release. It seems that if anyone comes up with a new technology/idea that doesn't fit the exact zeitge

I didn't read anything about being kept from "using, developing, and supporting free software". I did read: "Even though I contribute to the open source world in my own small way and see the importance of it, I find myself caring less and l

Now that is probably the most sensible thing that's been written in this entire thread. Figure out a way to make the transaction as seamless & low-risk as "tossing a quarter into the can" and you've gone a long way to solving the piracy

Too true. It sometimes feels like programming is about trying to glue a bunch of hacks together creating yet another hack. Then someone standardises said conglomeration of hacks. Repeat.

Couldn't agree more. No matches _is_ a result. I don't go use a search engine because I must click on a link, any link. I go there to find _relevant_ information. If there isn't any, tell me & I can get on with my day.

Interesting how median lifetime revenue increases with the number of developers on a game up until 20+, where it dips. From this it would seem 10 to 20 person teams are the sweet spot for mobile game development. Now I just need to find 9 t

Coming from C++, protocols vs categories still mystify me a bit. They appear to be methods for doing multiple inheritance type stuff without the multiple inheritance problems. From what I understand protocols set a list of methods that a cl
