It never was. Silicon Valley was/is filled with smart people who knew how to get on top. They realized that using ideals to sell their cold hard reality was a great way to get useful minions to put their hearts and souls into projects.

Would it not make sense to instead of restrict all extraction put a number < what is extract up for sale each year at an exorbitant price in a highly regulated market? Then you can fund conservation. It would create an economic incentive
