Gah! "Hunter-gatherers practiced the most successful and longest-lasting life style in human history." And since then, all we've managed to do is construct the entirety of human knowledge. Atoms, DNA, trips to space.. I mean I'm sitting in

The worst mistake in human history was me reading this terrible article. The author doesn't think hierarchical societies are possible in hunter/gatherer societies?

I'm not in a YC startup, and I don't seek to start one. So take it with a grain of salt... the tone here has been better in the short time without points. I think some of the personality types that YC attracts do poorly in a civil discussi

Fair point, and I didn't consider this rude at all. I am not offended by being misread (it happens) or by rudeness (within reason, if the content is good). The intersection, less so. Thanks for the links. All for reducing caloric intake

The idea of collaboration tools with points/voting/buzz indexes across large organizations could be a good idea, but please won't someone come up with a better buzzword for it?

Well, I don't confuse the two issues. I'm glad that is out of the way. Let me try a different tactic: what is your specific problem with this article? Do you object out of hand to non-peer reviewed science articles regardless of quality?

I spent half my undergrad in labs, writing up formal scientific results. I wrote and was graded on plenty of scientific papers. I have a fine understanding of scientific publishing, data analysis, and experimental methods. The fact that y

There is conclusive evidence of a problem. The rise in diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are all out there and free to anyone with a web browser. One might say that given a health crisis, sitting back not saying anything would be irresp

That article wasn't content free. Read the part talking about how glucose and fructose are metabolized differently, how excessive sucrose intact overwhelms the liver (processing fructose) and leads it to produce fat, and how that ties into

For what it's worth, I _really like_ the change. The almost unconscious thought of "does this comment deserve more karma than it already has" was useless, it's much better to decide whether it's a good or bad comment just on its own merit

Then don't upvote then, it's simple! Remember http://xkcd.com/386/ I always thought that the saving grace of /. was the metamoderation. People here downvote based on personal bias here frequently enough, and it would be nice to have the

Pointing out that someone who is not an expert in a particular field is not an expert in that field is not 'ad hominem'. That is a 'true statement'. When you have a complicated system, and a non-expert comes in with a plan, then it's appr

I'm disappointed that I was downvoted to 0 on this one. I didn't think I was overly argumentative and gave an honest response to the parent poster. I hate meta-comments, but they wouldn't be necessary if people wouldn't moderate based on

What did I say that made you think I wasn't aware of how destructive coal generate power is? I don't need to point out why people are talking so much more about nuclear power safety than coal safety over the past month or so.

I think that last thing is inaccurate. Because of better efficiency, simpler plant design, and no fly ash disposal natural gas generated electricity is a little cheaper at current prices. This was a surprise to me, because coal can be 15-

I have firsthand experience in online retail and if California is 'tax hungry' for that reason, then every other state in the country is, also. If you have payroll in a state, you collect sales taxes for physical items shipping there.

You're right of course - I really wanted to demonstrate that P/E ratios are a function of future growth and that a stock with a very high P/E can be underpriced. I still know some people that think a company with a $4 share price is 'cheap'

If you assume 30% growth for 5 years, dropping to 8% after that with a discount rate of 11%, then the $3 EPS implies a price target of $260. DCF derived targets imply some crazy valuations in high growth situations... That said I wouldn't
