I have a friend who is a dj and has been struggling to get his music apps to work properly on his Surface; he ended up having to disable to a bunch of stuff to get it to work glitch free. So I would definitely wait to see how other people g

Sweet, I've been needing something like this, and had been considering rolling my own. This looks like it'll save me the trouble!

It looks like an interesting book, and the price is nice, but it's a hard sell with so little information on the contents; even just a table of contents would be very helpful...

My guess is that they probably went straight to the authorities, while playing along with the intruders as a way of buying time and collecting as much information on them as possible. I'm not surprised that they wouldn't make an official co

I don't have all that much experience with backbone yet, so I can't compare the validity of their approaches vs "plain" backbone. However, my understanding is that both these meta-frameworks were extracted from some pretty big existing appl

I'd be curious to see how ruby fares using a setup other than apache + passenger; I have a feeling that nginx with unicorn or puma would provide better results, and might give it a go when I have a bit more time.

No need to roll your own, there are solutions out there already: https://github.com/railsware/smt_rails , and surely others by this point

Nice! A couple of comments though 1) The separators in the top bar are a bit too 3d to fit with the rest 2) The button borders are not dark enough in the button groups

To be honest, I've had a lot more problems with gems external to rails than problems with rails itself; and this particular case seems like an issue that should have gotten caught via testing.

You may have complete control, but you also have a lot more responsibility; for tuning your software, and keeping it up to date. I recently got bitten by a bug with an out of date version of apache, where the whole server would become unres

Depends what you mean by "best". It's certainly the simplest, and performant enough for most cases.

Only for requests you'd like to have return async, as in the example given; I use event machine to make async posts mixed with regular blocking IO all the time.

Heroku offers the Standard New Relic tier for free, so there's no reason not to use it. The pro tier has definite advantages, but isn't required to do what is being described in the article. As for unicorn, unless your application is a real

It's actually a lot better than buying more dynos, because you're adding a second level of intelligent routing to the system. The original rap genius blog post has some graphs that illustrate the benefits: http://rapgenius.com/James-somers

The difference is that an EC2 instance is a lot more powerful than a heroku dyno, so you definitely wouldn't be running a single rails instance on each; you'd be running several, using something like passenger or haproxy, something that do

I have to agree, Linode's support is second to none; they've helped me debug problems that had little to do with them, and they respond very quickly.
