That is something I have strived for recently, to use all the great window management features of my window manager of choice instead of browser tabs or lots of terminal tabs running tmux. If that didn't work well I guess it would have

Most web forums I used the visit had something like that back in the day. Worked against primitive pre-LLM bots and presumably also against non-English-reading human spammers.

Problem with the Android version is how ... to access the files it saves (or exports to). They seem to end up in the app-specific data directory that no other app can read on newer versions of Android.

For a GUI in a limited sense you can use TIC-80 with its built-in Janet support. It can export to stand-alone binaries too, but I did not try that (and I mostly used TIC-80 with Fennel, not Janet). Obviously I understand most of the time so

I did most of the 2023 Advent of Code using Janet and it was a great experience. I forced myself to use PEGs as much as possible, even when it was overkill, and I really began to like those for the readability and ease compared to other par

I installed that on both my computer and phone after someone mentioned it in some HN comment a few months ago. On my phone it has been the only game I have played in several years that wasn't in an emulator (mostly DOSBox). Also convin

NoScript removes almost all of that, at the insignificant cost of sometimes having to add some (usually temporary) exceptions to run scripts from a few domains.

Fun project, but I wonder how difficult it would have been to get Fennel to run in Guile-Lua? The article did not get into any details or even mention if it was seriously attempted. Fennel supposedly supports "Lua 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, o

Saw someone built his own DIY radon fan system. Think it was a clip from Swedish public service tv. He built it using 12V fans from server racks. Guess that is an option as well.

Is 16 MB "only" for Erlang? I thought it started like something made for embedded hardware decades ago? Wikipedia says 1986. Makes me curious at what pace and why the size has grown from 1986-2025 and how long ago the line was cro

Always seems random to me. Can't guess if a menu is going to display itself or wait for a click. The worst kind behaves differently if you click or not. Clicking the menu button brings you to some kind of special menu/profile page

You can have visual feedback without delays, so that is no excuse. A UI that operates as fast as I can type, with no visible frame-skips, or click is always going to feel better to use than some sluggish bloat ui.

I don't even bother with ad blockers anymore. I just use NoScript. That it removes some 99.999% of ads is just a nice side-effect, but if a site was just displaying some ads without the tracking nonsense I would be fine with that, with

At least half the reason I have a Gemini server running (the protocol, not the LLM), but no web sever anymore, is that it uses Trust On First Use, like SSH, rather than requiring all the complexities of CAs. Not saying all of the web should

No, but we have a steady stream of tickets at work for scripts that must be fixed to work with a new minor python version. I thought this was common knowledge. Just look at the non-empty list of removed things in every minor release changel

Python also seems to have more issues with stability, in the sense that things randomly stop working when you upgrade from version 3.x to 3.x+1. Lua might not be perfect either, but at least it seems common that a platform supports a range

A nice thing about seeing an engine or application support Lua for scripting is that it implies Fennel can be used (and transpiled to Lua). Or at least that is highly likely unless something unusually weird is going on. https://f

There is also Janet. Not quite Clojure, but heavily inspired and a nice language. And it has a pretty small, mostly ANSI C implementation, easy and fast to compile anywhere I tried, and can be embedded in applications with no LLVM dependenc

The single best thing about DOS in 2025 is that it is the base for the best virtual machine, DOSBox. If something runs in DOSBox it will always run. DOS software can not rot. No APIs change. And DOSBox has been ported to almost every platfo
