Here is a good starting point: https://webusers.imj-prg.fr/~pascal.michel/ I read about busy beavers a while ago but have only started digging into the subject. Its really fascinating!

Perhaps but I did find Six Thinking hats useful when I was working. The main advantage was to nip prospective "devils advocates" too early in the process.

I should mention that I started regular automated index fund investing in the mid 1990s. I have been through two _big_ market corrections: 2001 and 2008-9. Despite being nervous, I never once stopped my automatic investments.

I retired early recently - I am in my mid 50s. It's not anywhere as hard as people seem to think. With a disciplined approach to investing, I think that it's very much possible to reach financial independence with a typical tech s

This is a good point. However in practice we wind up with a number of gatekeepers between the developer and the actual users. These gatekeepers are both on the customer side and the developer side. For example on the developer side, sales p

“We’ve completed the science, what’s left to do is scale up from lab-scale prototypes to grid-scale power plants." I can't even count the number of lab-stage announcements that I have seen in HN. This will be of interest only when

I worked in the Watson group during the time you mention - the problem that they made was to attempt to productize the original Jeopardy system. The Jeopardy system was built with the single-minded goal of winning jeopardy. It was much too

Exactly! Palmisano was squeezing every last cent and starving the company of resources for developing the future. Even by 2008, it was clear hat cloud computing was the next big wave and yet IBM built out its own half-baked internal cloud o

You are absolutely correct. In fact, most NLP software ignores the formatting of documents which conveys a lot of information as well. For example, section headings must be treated differently from the text that makes up the body of a secti

Thank goodness I am retired and don't have to publish stuff in the current environment. Thirty years ago when machine learning was a sleepy backwater, life was a lot easier for us.

Main problem was that it was hard to get time on our CM2 to run jobs. You had to sign up in advance and it was a nuisance. Also debugging the parallel version of C for the CM2, called C* was pretty hard to debug as well.

I have a similar story but I was not quite so clever. Back in 1990 and 1991, I used a cluster of IBM RS6000 workstations in my university to train neural networks. I had previously tried to get backpropagation to work on a Connection Machin

I was working towards my PhD in machine learning with neural networks in 1990 and I tried to implement backpropagation in Occam in 1989. But gave up and tried using C* on a Connection machine instead. That did not work out well either so I

I wrote a lot of code on a Meiko computing surface in Occam in the late 1980s! Was very hard to get even simple algorithms to run.

There is also the issue of pay and a sense of having enough. Many tech workers are very highly paid. At some point, you have enough money so you don't really have to work. I myself reached "my number" last year and retired. M

I encountered the wierd token ring connector for the first time when I joined IBM in the early 1990s. But the proprietary connector got replaced with a standard RJ45 jack later on. But by that time, it was clear that Ethernet had won.
