Well, this reminds of the Microsoft Office UI (I think its called Ribbon?). I think the rule around that is that people can make apps that mimic that UI EXCEPT in the case where the apps are direct competitors. Seems to be the case here too

I am incredibly happy with Google Keep. Set it up like a Chrome desktop application and you can tap into all the awesomeness of Drive also. It's very simple, syncs with your phone app, etc.

They are a piece of beauty when it comes to information design. GA doesn't have a quarter amount of complexity compared to something like Photoshop.

Good point. But have you used Adobe's creativity products? They are massive, but still extremely usable. GA has somehow only paid attention to UI and forgotten all UX issues.
