I think the person you’re responding to was trying to help you be more persuasive. You can ignore his advice, but it may mean that a lot of people just ignore you or think you’ve got nothing to say.

I’m not sure I understand the assumption that Reddit can serve up better/safer info than google. It’s pretty trivial to post misinformation, malicious advice and so forth on Reddit. And how many times do I pull up stackoverflow with a

Good point. I don’t think they will be a good search engine replacement, but maybe a powerful supplement for some users. And honestly with SEO and other issues even search engines can be manipulated in ways that an average user might have

You can verify it’s accuracy. The metaphor of “con artist” is a poor one. It has no adversarial interest. A con artist does. Furthermore, con stands for confidence. A con artist manipulates confidence. Gpt and other language models are “wha

I think what we call academia isn’t really academia, but a system that’s subservient to the desires of the state. The dollars come from somewhere and there are always strings attached. Sure, a tenured professor has more freedom than the ave

Many bests in this thread, but here’s a few nobody else has posted: Stanford course on NLU was pretty good for basic overview https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ_Jrc_nRJY (2019, so a bit dated now.) Was recently enjoying Paul

2 options: 1) gentoo 2) FreeBSD Which of those you choose depends on your needs. I’d try FreeBSD first, and if you find it lacking then I’d go for gentoo. BSD seems like a well kept secret, but it won’t work for everyone. They do have s

I’m converging on this myself. Very little interest in news tv, especially the highly partisan flavor which increasingly dominates. Sadly some of the better print journalism is paywalled. Sub stack is great but I’m used to free so probably

You could. There is a labor market. Markets are influenced by supply and demand. With 10’s of thousands of layoffs, the supply of candidates will be very high. But demand for swe is high on average overtime. If you’ve been interested in thi

This is a valid point. Film as a media is a far more potent vector for propaganda than print. Increasingly this is being leveraged by bad actors or those who are more interested in persuasion or psychological effect than in presenting truth

Funny. :) But in all seriousness, I can get a good authentic burrito made by real Mexicans for less than $10, so why go to chipotle and pay 50% more and a side dish of “attitude” from the local high school kids who want to close early.

I don’t have a problem with uneducated people who don’t know what “monetary policy” means. I do have a problem with educated people who don’t want to spend a few minutes to google “Fed’s dual mandate” and consider why that answers their qu

That is a good question. Not terribly hard to answer either. Things in America cost a lot. Labor costs a lot. Everyone needs a livable wage and good health care, even carpenters. Wood costs a lot, and it should because trees take a long tim
