I remember the first time someone pointed out this lack of bug splatter to me and I was a bit scared about humanity's fate, but then someone else pointed out that our cars are a LOT more aerodynamic now. Not sure which side to land on

Arxiv will accept a rendered pdf, no source files required. Are any special features unlocked if source files are uploaded?

I have come to realize that when we do a peer review for Journal X, all we are really doing is protecting the journal's reputation by helping weed out substandard papers. There seems to be a belief that the peer review process is like

This math is not adding up for me...isn't import warp necessary? So you only 6 more characters to write as wp. And anyway, to me savings in cognitive load later when I'm in the flow of coding is worth it.

People seem to like watching what other humans are capable of. AI can play X better than humans (where X = chess, go, tic-tac-toe, ...), yet we still prefer to watch human vs human. I think the same will happen with music too. We'll ha

The problem with the "supply and demand" argument in this case is that the demand for apartments is essentially infinite. People absolutely NEED a place live, so it's not just a normal, rational transaction. Companies know

I am quite surprized how few people are proposing to make art or music. Is this why artists/musicians can't make money, because so few people enjoy it? I always thought it was the digitization and easy access that allowed us to en

Quarto FTW! I uses pandoc to translate between formats, is almost effortless to use, and seems to be growing very fast.

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately, and come to the same conclusion as the quoted Eugenie Reich: “It’s not a mystery or pathology why somebody who’s under pressure in their work might misstate things to their supervisor”.

Nobody seems to be talking about the fact that the AI behind self-driving is trained on real driver behavior...but real drivers are pretty terrible! The fact that your car hugs the right side of the road is because that's what real dr

This is a really interesting idea! Wow. I love when I hear something that totally filps my worldview. Sensor fusion and enough AI could almost certainly do this.

I am so happy that the author of this piece clearly states, right up front, that ElMu did not actually found Tesla! The marketing aimed to perpetuate this misunderstanding has always irked me...and led the entire world to believe stupid th

For sure. I also find I have to update my rubric to give more/less part marks, which also requires going back. It takes about 10-15 papers grades before things settle down.

This is a great idea! Next time I mark a stack of exams I will also note the time of day that the mark was entered. I can then cross-reference this with how long I have been sitting between breaks, since my last meal, etc, etc. Unfortuna

Too few nerds are willing to admit this. I use git all-day-long, but need to check stackoverflow to use the command line for anything more complicated than switching branches...and I'm ok with that. I save my brain space for more use

Another way to look at the problem of LLM-generated garbage papers is that it doesn't actually change anything, because serious researchers in a given field already didn't trust work coming from unknown labs in shady journals. Res
