Consider the possibility that it's you. Ask: Is it the industry, the company, the department, the city I'm in, or is it something in me? We all have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to ourselves. In my case it's largely

That's a nice return. Where I am (BC) we can do net metering but no longer get paid the surplus and I think our power costs are at the lower end of things. Being in a rain forest doesn't help. Don't get me wrong, the summer

I found it to be a fun feature: As a student riding the electric trolley busses in Vancouver in the 90's, I would put my walkman on AM radio and tune it as low as it could go and listen to the EM noises of the bus: The traction and a

Now I'm waiting for the seaside solar power plant/salt works proposal to pop up! Seriously: Maybe residue wouldn't be an issue if it was never allowed to dry, but the corrosion-proof construction, drainage system, and pumpin

Why? What actually killed it? Do you mean that you can't meet 100% of your demands, or it can't be done for some other reason? You could reduce, but not eliminate, the demand for purchased energy. Would that be unacceptable? Is

The main problem I see is it's more work because there's another aspect of an applicant that needs investigating; an extra step with those with records. I actually had a convicted killer as a helper for a short time and had even w

Many years ago I saw supplemental light used in commercial hothouses to extend the day. (~49°N) When the sun was setting, they came on and gave a few more hours of light. There's also the bonus of waste heat.

Booze is a different beast than the other vices. Sometimes being careful means not dying from the DT's in hospital because you understated how much you drink.

Whatever you do about the boozie, have medical supervision and ALWAYS be honest with your Doctor. Lie to your boss, partner, friends, and coworkers if you must but NEVER EVER lie to your doctor. Individuals vary considerably and there'

As someone who has been through several government vocational programs in Canada, I will say that when your Case Manager or Instructor says to write your resumes and letters a certain way, you do it.

I love that statement and I'm stealing it. The thought occurred that time dilation would result in the descendants of ISS crew members (and of their gut flora, for that matter) falling behind, but it would take a looong time in orbit t

Bonus topic near and dear to my heart: Ducting design is a biggie, but a neglected issue, and the biggest sin I see in residential HVAC, is ignoring a design's peak heating or cooling energy demands and installing oversized heat pumps

I don't know but for the other end of it, where I am, stamping approval to detain someone and prevent them from completing suicide takes one person for 48 hours and two for longer.

Euthanasia laws take that power from governments. Most places have a blanket prohibition on assisted death, which seems more authoritarian to me.

This process is available where I am, but spending thousands of dollars to consultants, meeting with City Planners, attending hearings, and months of waiting with no guarantee scare away a lot of folks.

Now you're talking. I agree that zoning shouldn't be done away with entirely. I think you're mostly right about developers not caring. Even the ones that care on a personal level are still in business to make money, but I re

Right on. It would be safe to assume a business with 30 employees would bring nearly 30 cars into the street and a coffee shop could increase foot traffic. These things aren't necessarily true, but those assumptions aren't necess

One prohibits industry and the other prohibits obnoxious behaviour. No matter what, zoning won't let me have a machine shop in my garage. The thing is that machine shops aren't all the same: If I'm servicing heavy equipment

I've designed a few homes and while zoning can be very constraining, it's not all bad. When I do a daylight study, its usability in and around the home along with the impacts on energy efficiency are the top concerns when it comes

Cool and depressing. I had a preview of this feeling in the 1990's: I went to a Nuclear Emergency Response Team (NERT) office at a base in Canada to pick up some radio equipment. They had a wall map in there showing the base as ground
