I thought it actually showed how to fix affirmative action. If you just admit the disadvantaged students, a higher percentage of them will sink. But if you help them with motivation, study habits, and positive outlook (which many lack due t

It's not just "like" the OP, that IS the academic paper by the psychology professor in the article about the work mentioned in the article.

I was also wondering if it was responsible of those involved to be talking to the press about their work, even before they said this. They run the risk of counteracting their effects if the students think it is a gimmick. Also, students not

I'm surprised more people are not calling you out on your elitism. How can you fail to grasp that people in disadvantaged situations don't get the support to succeed the way non-disadvantaged students do. Maybe she had a job in hi

The hopeful message is that some people are working hard to change this situation, so that able yet disadvantaged students can break the cycle and get a higher education.

I rarely down vote, but this is borderline classist. As in "screw the poor and disadvantaged, we should only support those who win, not those who can win." I really like UT's 7% rule. You have to believe that ability is equal

I agree that the article was not effective in introducing the topic and the problem space. I'm interested in mobile ui, but not familiar with all the new terminology, so this article was difficult to read. I scrolled down until I got t

I've often thought that the HN submission form should support both the link and a short comment. If the submitter can frame the context of the submission, doesn't that help the discussion?

For my definition of the commons being eroded by AirBnB, see my reply to eddieroger above. In a sense you are right that "democratic" doesn't necessarily mean just or morally good, but I don't think you can compare what

In my view, there are two commons being affected by AirBnB: first the community and sense of place where you live (building, neighborhood, town, city, etc.), and second a stable and accessible housing market. Community can have many facets:

Ok, I'll be "that" guy who heckles every AirBnB post, even if this one did have some nice graphs (and ideas). When is AirBnB going to experiment with helping their hosts follow the law? I bet I can predict that graph. Why, lo

Don't know why you got down voted so much for an opinion. I agree with you that the downsides he found were rather petty, and I'm no Google fan. And just the fact that it was a list of negatives made it look like a hatchet job, ki

I've read the thread up to here, and I do think Google is to blame for some heavy-handedness and some rather tone-deaf spokespeople (not that Matt_Cutts ever identified himself as speaking for Google, though he acts like it). But I thi

I think this is the biggest problem in the Internet sphere right now. It has been in the backs of everyone's mind for 20 years, but with no other solution available, the Internet has been financed 100% by ads. I often dream of a world

I, too, was hoping the culture that AirBnB shouldn't fuck up was that of the locations where they are doing business. I guess asking them to care about that would be too much to expect. I agree with the other comments in this thread, A
