Thanks! Chan's algorithms is actually able to combine both approaches and runs in n log h. It is a bit trickier though, so I didn't make an interactive for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan%27s_algorithm

I would be shocked if that was the cause of any lag - D3 selections are essentially nested wrappers around HTML nodes. .node just grabs the first one in a selection. https://github.com/mbostock/d3/blob/master&
