Why is there this obsession for a private company to be the champion of public science? Am I the only one that hasn't bought SpaceX shares? AFAIK there is the goal for NASA to work on a robotic refueling system, I don't know how o

Given that Apollo landed on the Moon during the Cold War and the space race with Russia, it's incredible what injecting a percentage of the US defense budget into NASA can accomplish.

That's the case for all news. But for Brexit specifically, you'd be hard pressed to find good news about Brexit even on Boris' side, given how it's turned out and what an absolute shit show the government has been the pa

He's a 80 year old American politician. It's the demographic of people that see religion and God everywhere, even when talking about an international, deeply scientific endeavour. It's a cultural quirk I guess.

4 failures in the first 6 years of operation, and only 1 in the following 20 years is a good track record. How were the other launch vehicles faring in 2002?

"The [Ariane 5] launch vehicle had a streak of 82 consecutive successful launches between 9 April 2003 and 12 December 2017." Then one partial failure on 25 January 2018, and another consecutive stretch of successful launches, inc

Same here, my plan for today is JWST launch, junk food, video games (I got into Battle Brothers, it keeps kicking my ass) and possibly a video call with family later today. Enjoy your December 25th people!

My hope is that if it's the latter, building a new JWST from scratch will not take as much time and money as designing the first prototype did. I hope they have kept really good notes and backups :-)

Same, but it's fast paced music, usually psytrance to do the laundry and the dishes. In fact psytrance is great for the ADHD brain, it's fast, it's always evolving with tons of different sounds and effects to keep you interes

There is no such thing as logical empathy. Empathy is the ability to perceive someone else's emotional state. i.e. putting yourself in someone's shoes.

Everything is buggy the newer it is, your point being? Linux itself was mostly unusable when it first started. And a kernel is even more important.

by 1_player 5y ago
Linux has never been about choice. There was choice because no two people could agree on a set of protocols and standards. And slowly we're converging on a small set of decent (not perfect!) ideas volunteers can focus their efforts on.
