I use an app I wrote to do the sha1 so the sentence is not hanging around in bash history, but I do rely on the cmd prompt at times on computers at my house. Here's a screeshot of the app: http://i.imgur.com/tz255.png No one but me uses i

I've been doing this: echo -n "A long sentence I can recall. site_name" | sha1sum I use the sha1sum from that as my password. site_name may be hackernews, slashdot, home, etc. I can break them in half (20 chars) or quarters (10 chars) if t

I would suggest learning algorithms and data structures. I know that is suggested a lot, but I did not realize how little I knew until I studied these things. And I think that is part of what makes good programmers stand out as these things

If it is a lie, is it not slander/libel? That would be a really big deal. Tarnishing a devs reputation and the OBSD project is not cool.

They prefer researching backdoors. The FBI implements them. Big difference. NSA researched and designed the clipper chips, then the FBI tried to get everyone to use the phones.

Micrsoft Active Directory stores what it calls an NT Hash in NTDS.DIT files on domain controllers. These are unsalted, md4 hashed, unicode strings. They are fast and easy to crack if you ever do get your hands on them. The point is that m

The forcing of OOP is my primary objection. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against OOP and use it when doing GUI wor, but I dislike being forced into OOP all the time. I also dislike the virtual machine. It's basically a platform just l

Ruby is nicer to read than Python. Here's how each language reverses a string: # Ruby string.reverse() # Python string[::-1] Which looks better? Edit: I'm not sure why this is being down voted. It's a true statement. Edit2: With all the d

One does not have to be "technical by trade" to know that using "password" as your password is wrong. Only idiots do that. And they do do that, otherwise the "sophisticated hackers" (I jest) would not be "cracking" all of these OpenSSH se

Most likely the "hacker" broke into the FTP server because the admin of that server used the word "password" as his password. So natural selection took them both out. Two less idiots to deal with.

I use brute force on 0 to 5 character attempts. I get smart at 6 or more characters. No need to use brains or GPU speed to crack 5 char passwords. Here are more weak hashes from his list: DA39A3EE5E6B4B0D3255BFEF95601890AFD80709 ""

That depends on the number and type of CPUs available. I know better than to race my CPU against a GPU. I won't win. I'm just pointing out the fact that if you have a fast GPU (or a cluster of them as the article suggests), then the hashes

The sha1 hashes he provides are super weak. I can crack half of them in less than 30 seconds on my CPU with my software (16crack). Hardly material for a GPU: EF8420D70DD7676E04BEA55F405FA39B022A90C8 "Password!" 5BAA61E4C9B93F3F0682250B6CF83

Payment Card Industry (PCI DSS 1.2) only requires 7 characters and some must be alphabetic while some must be numeric. So "soccer1" is a perfectly valid, PCI compliant password that will be cracked in less than a minute (offline or online).

With the right hash type (unsalted md4... yes, I'm looking at you Microsoft Windows Active Directory) and a top notch Nvidia or AMD graphics card, one can attempt roughly 600 million hashes per second at home in the living room. Also, one o
