Nice write-up. I do the same sort of segmentation. It's just good practice to break things up into independent parts. Your registrar should only register domains, nothing else. DNS should be separate and distinct from that as should email a

I love C++ and I know guys who love Java. And they are great systems programmers. I have nothing against Java the language (I do dislike the focus on OOP), but do have issues with JVMs (I prefer real machines rather than virtual ones), howe

I value free, open source software more than convenience. For this reason, I will not use OSX or any other non-free operating system no matter how convenient they may be to use. That convenience comes at a great cost that I am not willing t

"I have a simple rule for email that I don't want." Me too. I use procmail to send it to /dev/null. I've done this for the last 12 years.

+1 for procmail and having the sense about you to manage these things yourself rather than trading your privacy for a bit of convenience.

I would wager that a certain percentage of people in the US have no Internet service at all. Your guess on that percentage is as good as mine. I can think of several older people I know that do not have Internet service or cell phones. Nor

Fair point. I don't disagree. It just bothers me to see how what little privacy we have left continues to erode.

An important fact that many young people may not realize is that federal student loans cannot be removed by declaring bankruptcy. Most other loan debt can, but not these loans. These loans will be with you and are your responsibility to rep

I would have serious privacy concerns about this. You are basically allowing a 3rd-party to read your email.

I would say that Python has a feeling of inconsistency at times compared to other scripting languages. I don't mean this as a criticism. I like and use Python a lot for work and personal projects. Here's an example of what I mean by inconsi

It's a radio signal. It's broadcast and if you are in range, you can tune in and listen. There's no possible way this can be construed as "wiretapping".

Very true! It seems fashionable to make fun of Perl and C++, but in the real world, they are everywhere, doing everything and they work extremely well.

Not sure what an open-plan office is. I did not use that term. It's my desk and my Ethernet cable and it's plugged into my laptop. No one else sits at my desk and no one should unplug my Ethernet cable from my laptop when I step out of the

Rule 11 - Don't unplug the Ethernet cable from my laptop when I'm not in the office. I have shit running on remote servers via ssh and they aren't always in a screen or tmux session. I'll become very angry and yell at you when you do this.

C++11 has hash tables now. Check out unordered_set and unordered_map if you really require a container backed by them. I agree with you on the RB trees though. Edit: I should add (and you probably know) that std::set and std::map are typica

One thing that I often do when dealing with old code that's performing low-level operations and outputting some binary format is to md5 the output. After that, I can change the code and I often do this when people ask for less memory usage,
