This strikes me as a market research tool - trying to find out what people want, the needs, the problem to be solved, the pain to address. It's tricky for users to make the connection between problem and solution (hell, it's tricky for any

Sorry about the inflammatory "hydrogen bomb" example - I couldn't think of a better way to express the thought (though maybe that's no excuse), but now I can: when looking for examples of companies that were harmed by opening sourcing their

Great article, I refer to it often, especially points 6, 7 and 8. However, I find the example of Steve Ballmer... uninspiring. It seems more like the luck of knowing Bill Gates, and he gets to oversea Microsoft's demise.

I'm personally troubled about the right attitude towards competitors... I but I think it's: Don't worry about competitors. Worry about making something people want. Constantly improving your product, for what your users want, automatical

Some other options: You could open source the engine, but not code that is specific to the game (then people couldn't run the game). For a legal distinction, you can also make source available , without making it open source. e.g. "look, m

There's a sort of Gresham's Law of trolls: trolls are willing to use a forum with a lot of thoughtful people in it, but thoughtful people aren't willing to use a forum with a lot of trolls in it. Which means that once trolling takes hold,

I wasn't defining Freemium; just using it as a jumping off point for talking about social good (because the blog author mentioned "do good" and "do well"). I'm concerned about social good, for the reasons pg discusses (morale, confidence,

I had this discussion with a (huge) US corporation, and they weren't interested in escrow, saying it was too complex. They wanted source code; and I had the impression that with appropriate license restrictions (i.e. they couldn't sell/dist

I didn't think you were attacking my character - I thought you were saying that my argument was so weak that it was a straw man argument, erected only be knocked down. I replied that your cynicism about my motives was misplaced. And it is.

Maybe we do: faster client-side AJAX would create a much better user experience... but how much this is needed , I don't know. Maybe it doesn't really matter? At any rate, speed can be increased substantially without faster hardware, but w

I don't think throughput is a barrier at the moment. The main touted benefit I've heard of Chromium's tab-threading is insulation, so if one tab crashes it doesn't bring the whole browser down.
